Default Finalists for World Green Car of the Year

Quote:
Not to be confused with Green Car of the Year or the North American Car of the Year or the European Car of the Year, the World Green Car of the Year award honors environmentally friendly cars that are available in at least one major market, i.e., North America, Europe or Asia.

The 2009 finalists are the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the Toyota iQ and the Honda FCX Clarity. Itís an interesting competition because eligible vehicles need not be production vehicles sold on a wide scale. And two of the three cars (i-MiEV and FCX Clarity) fit that bill. Only the FCX Clarity is available in the United States, where it is currently being leased to a select group of owners.

The i-MiEV is a small electric vehicle with a range of 80 to 100 miles. The iQ is a small city car ó roughly the size of a Smart Fortwo ó with room for three adults and one child. It runs on a 1-liter gas engine. Right now it is sold in Japan, where it recently won Japanís Car of the Year award, and Europe.

Fuel mileage is around 55 miles a gallon, though in January, Toyota did a hypermile stunt in Britain and got 60 m.p.g.

The FCX Clarity is a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. There are only a few on the road, in the hands of celebrities and early testers. You can drive up to 280 miles on a single tank of hydrogen ó if you can find hydrogen.

It seems tough to pick a winner out of three vastly different cars, with vastly different scales of production and a range of technology. How would one judge the rather basic iQ against the future tech of the FCX Clarity?

They are so different, and some say that hydrogen vehicles, which still require an immense, yet-to-be-built infrastructure of refueling stations, will never see the light of day.

Nevertheless, a winner will be announced at the New York auto show next month, along with the other World Car of the Year categories.

My money is on the iQ, as it will do more good now.

But the Clarity would take it in a few years if they make one for widespread use.
