Well looks like it time for a tranny upgrade. I just dont know what I should go with. My car will have a 2.5 hybrid with a sr 56 so I want to make sure the tranny can hold up. Let's just for argument sake say they both cost the same so that will rule out the cost factor. Let me know what you would do

I loved my JDM 6spd swap when I had my wrx. It was a lot of fun for daily driving. Plus they can hold just as much beating as the PPG gears.

You can get a 6speed setup for 3600 and sell your old tranny for some cash. Not gonna get much from selling just the stock gears

OP wants cost left out of this decision.
i say 6 speed, having owned a stock wrx 5mt, a stock 5mt with RA gears, a full JDM RA drivetrain, and now a stock sti 6mt. the ONLY exception i can think of is the JDM RA drivetrain is better for drag racing. the 6 speed has a considerably more precise feel to it and its better for driving on the street as well.

When most people think of a 6 speed SETUP, i think of trans, rear, hubs, axles, brembos, EVERYTHING, and you are not getting all that for $3600

because i know i wouldn't let my full 6speed setup with brembos and everything go that cheap

I would take a 6 speed over a built 5 speed

You might think of it that way. Most people think of r160 3.90, auto driveshaft, shirt linkage, and tranny.

My vote: 6 speed.

I really like the precise feel and short ratios of the STi 6-Speed. That being said, I also enjoy shifting. There are rare times when I wish I didn't have to shift so soon, but all things considered, I greatly prefer it. I personally would not go with a JDM 6-Speed because you only really use the 'short' gears through 4th unless you are on a track.

Now, all that being said, if you want the increased length similar to that of the 5 speed, but with the strength and precise feel of the 6-speed, get a 6mt out of a Legacy Spec. B.

JDM 6spd have the same 1-4 as the USDM. Just a shorter 5th and 6th but it's not horrible.

I have driven the Straight cut synchro'd PPG box before and it shifts smooth like a normal tranny. It was straight cuts 1-4. The sound was fine with me. Some would say they are way too loud but it's nothing crazy once you are in 5th if you go with the stock 5th gear.

One downfall with the PPG box was the synchros seemed to go out quicker because people get all excited banging gears and all. That can happen with the 6spd box as well but I never had a problem with that and I was flat foot shifting majority of the time when I tracked the car.

sick speed ftw. i have driven my buddies ppg helical and it drove fine but you dont get what some call the "precise" shifter feel of 6 speed. ppg felt like wrx tranny with longer gears. when you shift sti you feel where your money went...

The 5 speed will get you better times drag racing IF it holds up. Remember a 6 speed weighs about 3-4 times as much as a 5 speed and even a built 5 speed it not as strong as a 6 speed.

I voted 5 spd...ppg

Why? I OWN a set... I had andrewtech build a full 1-4 helical set for my 06 wrx.. Setup is great.. not to loud for DD.. Car is no longer a DD, and is being fitted for full race ts40r and cossie block, so I am thinking twice on my decision... hopefully they are as strong as they say..

I love normal driving with them though.. .02

6spd all the way. I got mine for 2500 re used my axles etc. I love the thing for sure.
Get a 6spd. I am pretty sure the ppgs have to be rebuilt more often. . . Or should be rebuilt more often.

Just what I have heard so take that with a grain of salt.

Doing a dog box wouldn't be worth it unless you were doing nothing but tracking the car, and had money to rebuild it all the time. Personally gear whine doesn't bother me any, I enjoy it actually. It's really up to you, but for my .02, built 5 speed synchro-box..
