Post MY00 has turbo lag.. er... rather.. NA lag.....

So something's up with my car. I noticed it on the ride down to RI but dismised it since it was a one time thing. However... it has come back ten fold.
After reaching operating temperature while idling... the idle will vary as much as 150-200 rpm. The car will begin to sound like it's going to stall... however does hold on, and hasn't stalled yet. I was 2000 miles overdue for my 30,000 mile tune up.. so I replaced the PCV valve, fuel filter, plugs, and all necessary fluids last night. No difference, in fact, it seems to be getting worse. Under load, first gear has major hesitation, with second not being much better. It almost feels like I have VTEC; with the majority of the power kicking in right around 4000 rpm. Hard accelerations are fine, smooth accelerations are punctuated by bucking, hesitation, and loud curses originating from the drivers seat.

I did just recieve a notification in the mail about a factory recall b/c of a faulty 02 sensor and have an appointment on Friday. Could this be the root cause? Any info you guys might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Fitz

Yeah... O2 could do it... No CE light tho?? The WRX's don't put the gas cap on facing Notrh on a Tuesday , and the CE light goes on! Some cars ar sooo picky, while others won't ever code.

I would make a trip to the dealership.

It could be that, and it could also be your wires depending on how many miles are on your car. It could be many things but it does not sound serious at all, might even just be some bad gas, I wouldn't worry about it to much, just get all of your routine maintenance done and it will most likely go away. good luck

No check engine light as of yet.. and I have 32,000 miles on the car. I had originally thought it might have been a clogged fuel filter, but this does not seem to be the case.

Did you try resetting the ECU at all Mark?
I know it sounds stupid, but you never know.

I would also take a close look at all the connnections around the motor, etc..

Any smoke from the exh. when the car seems to want to stall?

Mark,

the 4000rpm "kick" is the key there. To the best of my knowledge, the stock ECU starts ignoring the O2 sensor output above 4000rpm and goes open-loop.

Get a new O2 sensor. I'm 90% sure that is the cause of your problem. It should be warranteed unless you're out of warranty. If you are, I have an extra O2 sensor you can try out to see if it works, and if it does, we can talk about it.

I agree with edwin and Kris the other thing is if it was wiring to the ecu more then likely you would throw a check engine light or blow a fuse. The only other thing i could says is your map sensor or maf which ever one that car has i dont know. If you were around while my was doing it when i had my rs, it was doing the same thing sometimes wouldnt even run but if you have the map thats why its actually staying running. I you can get in there asap becuase they will have to order it and its not one day air hehe.

No smoke from the exhaust when it's looking to stall at idle... and I haven't reset the ECU as of yet. I'll try that tonight when I head home.

Thanks for the 02 offer Edwin. I just got a factory recall notice in the mail a few days ago because of the 02 sensor, so I'm sure they won't be looking to charge me. I might also be getting a new catalytic converter out of the deal since my mechanic hinted that the sensor's tend to be stuck in the accopanying pipe. Such a shame.

Don't worry Chad, I'm not looking to blame this on your wiring in of the S-AFC (Superb job by the way, haven't had an issue yet). I'm pretty sure that if it stemmed from the ECU it would have thrown a code by now.

"You eve notice that these cars throw more codes than the major league throws baseballs, however when they're actually broken, the check engine light is as silent as can be"
