Default n/a tuning questions

i have a 99 forester with a 4eat. i have put an ej22t shortblock in it with the ej25 sohc heads. i am getting terrible gas mileage. on that year what open source tuning options are available? i dont want to spend alot of money on this as i am going to be swaping this car in the next year or so. i have access to a tatrix cable as well. any help would be greatly appreciated as i didnt find much when i searched. thanks

The milage is likely due to a VERY low compression ratio with that combination. On the upside...it's pretty much ready for a turbocharger to kick it in the arse!

With that combo of block and heads you have about 7.4:1 comp. ratio. Extremely low for a N/A motor. That is of course if you used the stock EJ22 headgasket which is 1.52mm thick, if you used a thinner gasket your CR will be a little higher.

AFAIK, open source only works for 05+ ecu's. I havent done very much research on it but thats what I remember reading a year or so ago, so dont quote me.

Until you turbo that motor your mileage is going to suck. So you are going to have to live with it for now. If you would have swapped in N/A EJ22 pistons, you would have 8.8:1 CR. But with the combo you have now you will be able to run a lot of boost, which is, what I think your plan was.

one of the few instances f/i will actually help your gas mileage after a swap...

there's your excuse which will work on wife if needed.

wow didnt think the compression ratio would go that low with that setup. that does make sense that the gas mileage is low due to the absolute lack of any power the car has currently. i have a garret 30r that is sitting in the garage from my previous build.... probably going to end up putting that on this summer if i can justify the cost of the up/down pipe and wastegate. i have everything else necessary including the hydra ecu w/ wideband and 3" exaust. guess ill have to do it if anyone find any tuning software for the old setups please keep me posted.

yeah you definitely need to throw that turbo in man.. 7.4:1 is just too easy to pass up, you're ready for decent boost

The CR goes that far down beacuse the EJ22T pistons have 28cc's of dish, and the EJ22E N/A pistons only have 12cc's of dish.
