would there be any way i can keep my 5 speed transmission and just swap out the engine with a 2005 sti engine, and get a new ecu or would i reflash my ecu. can any one take me through the steps or point me towards a thread that could tell me how to swap.

Yes. How, sorry I have no idea. I just know it's common to keep the 5mt. It's just a few wires. Surprised there is no post about this or sticky.

Swap the transmission and keep your engine instead...you can easily reach/exceed STi power levels with the '02-'05 2.0L block.

just swap for the stock 6sp sti transmission... it can handle an obscene input. swap the trans, build the engine.
running a 5sp will hold up with turned up boost and higher input, but for how long... most likely (unless you never launch/drive hard on it) you will need trans work anyways. tranny FTW! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1717700 I assume some have seen this thread, this guy claims to be rolling with the stock trans. |

swapping the tranny and building the motor would be the way to go!

Yup. You were looking at it all wrong. Swap the TRANNY from the STI NOT the motor. You could easily bolt on a vf39, get an exhaust and tune, and be quicker than any stock STI for a bout a grand.

^ videos makes me sleepy
ppg can do a lot more. I have 70k miles on my ppg. I have been known to get smoke off my tires. Yet these guys are right. Unless you built the box 6mt would be a good choice. |

I am interested in the original question. Many people know everything about transmission swaps. It's well documented. Everybody knows the advantages, etc.
But, back to the initial question: What if? What if you don't have the money to do the right thing just yet (getting the 6 speed) and you get caught with the 5 speed at high mileage, say 160 k miles and your 2.0 dies, of spun bearing, by example.. You decide to immediately do a 2.5 and postpone the transmission, although WE ALL KNOW that's what you should do (transmission first). This probably happens in real life. Each time you have some $, you go for more power. Untill, one day it's too late for your 2.0, BEFORE you had a chance to do a 6speed. And here's my question: How do you go about driving the AVCS in the 2.5? A reflash of the 2.0 ECU? I don't think so. Without the AVCS, your 2.5 is more like a 2.3 (I'm just kidding, what I mean is that you're starting with less than 100% of what the Sti offers stock) There's the throttle by wire, which requires a pedal, and probably running a wire to the engine compartment, etc. OR you may run the 2.5 on cable throttle, I wonder if anyone did that, by using your old TB. So, please, answer the original question. Last edited by Vlad; 03-19-2009 at 10:54 AM. |

http://elementtuning.com/technical/ej25_install.htm i think this is what you are after... this is for the STI longblock not just the short block... -=Suberdave=- |
