Default 5w-30 if running autocross?

I am wondering I am going to be doing my first 1K mile oil change next week. In about a month is my first autocross event. We will still be getting into the 20, and 30 for a month or two more. I am just wondering should I still run a 5w-30 when doing autocross? Or once summer hits should I change to a different weight oil because of autocross and being on a track with temps in the 90+ area?

This is my first turbo car so I want to make sure I take car of that engine just right.

5w30 is fine for autox. Auto-x is more or less running at speeds no higher than highway speeds, and for only short amounts of times (around 1 minute per run) and then the car can cool off usually between runs. You'll be just fine.

Not to start another oil war, but the Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5w-40 is friggin fantastic in turbo Subarus and is cheap to boot. Wal-Mart for about $17/gallon or most Advance Auto Parts, VatoZone, etc.

^ that's what i was going to recommend. some have good UOAs with m1 but there are also many that have spun bearings while using m1 and rp. that's enough to scare me away. fwiw, i've been using castrol syntec 0w30 euro formula for the last 2 oil changes and have had little to no oil consumption.

also, castrol syntec is on sale at autozones. $29.99 for 5qts and a k&n filter.

Ran mostly M1 syn and Castrol GC without ever losing a drop, 1 day on RP and I spin a bearing, coincidence?

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I've been running Mobil 1 5W30 for last 30K, including 2+ years of AX. Blackstone oil analysis shows less than average wear.

+1 for the 0w30 "german" Castrol, or the 5w40 Shell Rotella stuff from Wallyworld.

um..i'm going with yes. i think i'd **** myself if my engine was eating that much oil every 3k miles.

if i had the same amount of money invested, i'd try switching to the shell rotella 5w40 or castrol syntec 0w30 euro formula.

What is so good about Shell Rotella-T Synthetic? I did searching and it looks like it is not good if your car still has a cat on it.

Anything under 1 quart in 1000 miles is considered acceptable. If you want to subaru with a new car and that kind of consumption, I'm not sure they'd do anything about it. Built motors with loose tolerances, I'm not surprised they have consumption issues.

I wouldn't use ANY 30 weight oil in our motors. I currently use 0-40 eurospec M1 and will probably be using 15w-50 for this next track season. The owners manual's pretty clear that for severe service you want a thicker oil. Autocross and track use qualify as severe service in my book.
