Default Knocking sound with video

My '04 wrx engine (no mods, except AP stage 1) has been making a really annoying knocking sound when its cold. I noticed it a little at the end of last winter, and now that its cold out again, its back. Once it warms up, the sound all but goes away, but I can still barely hear it. The dealership took a look at it last April and adjusted the timing belt tensioner. That didnt make any difference. So now I'm afraid it could be piston slap. I understand that rod knock also sounds similar, but that wouldn't go away after warming up? I noticed that the oil is a little low and a little dirty after 3,500 miles or so, but nothing too serious. I made some videos where you can hear the sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrQPZKZHfWg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry_KtlbzWHo
I'm really hoping its not piston slap, but it is still under warranty so hopefully the dealership would cover it. Anyone have some insight?

Its what the dealership put in there. Is there some other oil that I should be using? I usually do my own oil changes, but I just had the 60k mile service done and thats what they used.

If it's still under warranty take it in. Mine kinda has a quiet knock in it only mine is a spun rod bearing. I caught it right away and didn't drive on it long. But that's kinda what mine sounds like. Can't say unless someone actually takes a look at it in person who knows what they are talking about.

I have an 04 wrx, and had a similar noise when it's cold (first start of the day 10 C or less ambient) but since I switched to a thicker oil (Rotella T 5w-40); the noise doesn't appear to be there anymore. OP, your noise is quite louder than what I had however.

Mine was really quite faint, the camera didn't really pick it up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXvZOF-QVrQ

Edit: If it goes away on warm-up; it's piston slap. If you still hear it after warm-up, it's likely rod knock.

Its going in on tuesday, I'm parking it monday night in their lot so it will be cold when they start it up. I'll post an update after that for those who are interested.

I always thought Mobil 1 was the good stuff. I bought the car used and I dont know what kind of oil was in it for its first 50k miles, although there are reciepts to show it was changed regularly.

Hmmmmmmm.....

It sounds like yours makes the same sound my motor does when cold. Once it's warmed up, though, it disappears completely.

I've been in a few other WRXs that make the same noise when cold, and as far as I know all of them carried on for many more miles with no noticeable increase in sound or loss in performance. I've heard the sound may not necessarily be rod knock... some say it is in fact piston slap, while other say it might be the timing belt tensioner going bad.

On the other hand... it does sound suspicious, and leaves me a little worried as well. I don't run Mobile 5W-30; I've stuck with Rotella 5W-40 in the summer, and German Castrol 0W-30 during the winter. I've thought about running the Rotella in the winter as well to see if it helps at all, but at the same time I realize that doesn't really make sense because the GC should flow better in cold temps.

Since you're still under warranty, take it to a dealer and see what they say. Be sure to post up their response... you're not the first person on the board to raise this question.

i had the same noise and yes i was running it with mobile 1. i went to wal mart to get my mobile 1 but they ran out and the price went up to 28 dollars a jug. so i decided to get a castrol 5w30. need less to say i start my car the next morning, the noise is definitely way quieter. i will never go back to mobile 1 again.

I was also running 5-30 in mine. Actually changed it a week before. As it looks now though seems like my oil pump was starting to crap out on me.

so what is different about the oils that makes the the noise apparent with mobil 1, but not others? do the other oils just eliminate the noise, or the actual problem?

I just wanted to throw in my $.02. I have used Mobile One synthetic since I purchased my car (used, 2 yrs ago) and noticed a knock the first cold snap we had. Mine also almost totally disappears when warm. I have noticed that it gets quiet under any positive MAP (boost) which leads me to believe it is cylinder related. Anyway, my Subaru dealership changed the oil a couple weeks ago (during a tranny swap) and the knock was noticeably quieter, but still present. They used Mobil 5-30 also, so I'm at a loss. Please post any results you find out for the rest of us!

what is the differenece between piss and molasses????

5w30 M1 is garbage.....plain, pure, and simple.

Get rid of it.

Motor oil is likely THE most misunderstood of all things automotive(other than bovs and hella flush ) and the most hype believed.
M1(and Royal Purple) have GREAT hype......but is a **** product.

I have been here a long time and THE 2 worst oils reported are 5w30 M1 and 5w30 RP.

Educate yourself on oil and make a better decision than M1 or RP.
Please.

Anyway, I'll try the Castrol and if that doesn't do it for me then I'll go to all Amsoil. It's just a little harder to aquire, Amsoil that is. As far as paying for better quality, the money was never the issue. In fact Mobile 1 is often more expensive than Castrol or Pensoil around here, although I did not believe for a second that it was better because it costs more. (A double bachelors in Marketing and Management does help me understand a little about advertising) However, after seeing what Bob the Oil guy found about Lucas and other additives, I wont be using that in my 93 Chevy with 250k on the odo, anymore.
