Default BMW Z4M Roadster Cancelled?

Quote:
If we are to believe a report from UK digital car magazine i-Motor, BMW has cancelled the development of an "M" version for the new Z4 roadster with the retractable hardtop because of the "ongoing financial crisis" and "lack of customer demand". Here's what the BMW spokesman -whose name was not disclosed- revealed to the British magazine: "Given the current economic crisis there is no business case for a full-on M version of the Z4".

I
f that's the case, then how can one explain the introduction of the X5M and X6M crossovers that are due to be unveiled this April?

Well, according to the unnamed spokesperson, the M-prepped variants of both the X5 and X6 were already under development and had been given the green light from the company's officials before the car market crashed down.

While we'll have to wait for some sort of official announcement from BMW to see whether or not the car has been truly canned, we must say that even though the X5 and X6M's development (may have) proceeded that of the Z4Ms, we fail to see the logic behind a decision that prefers two (totally unnecessary) M crossovers over an M roadster model, especially since the X5 and X6 are already offered with a mighty 408HP twin-turbo V8 engine.

Who cares?

Doesn't the regular Z4 have that turbo'ed I6 from the 335i and yet weighs less than the 3?

If so, then who gives a crap about some over-priced, over-powered M variant.

They don't have a motor for the new Z4 M. They need the turbo 6 that is slated for the next M3. I wish they did it for just 1 year with ye 'ole iron S54. But, as other posters have said, it's plenty nice with the 3.0 TT.

X5 M-version - I might buy one for a DD if it's tall enough for my dog to stand inside.

I can't think of anything more ridiculous than an X6 M version. Way to go BMW furthering the development of overpriced overweight tanks instead of an actual sports car.

Um. No. Z4 has either a 2.5 or 3.0, non turbo. M Coupe has a 3.2.

Wrong, the 2010 Z4 has either the 3.0l TT engine making 300hp, or the 3.0l NA engine making 255hp.

^^I think one is talking current Z4, and the other is talking 2010 Z4.

Well, darknightohio is right, because the M model discussed in the article would be based on the 2010.

Frankly, I don't blame BMW, nor mind if they don't make an M since the N54 is an option. I don't even really see what engine they would have put in it? The prior Z4M motor again? Not a real upgrade from the N54. What were they gonna do, drop the current M3's V8 in? I doubt it.

All I know is an underrated 300hp and metric f-ton of torque are more than enough for a little Z4 roadster.
