Default need help for complicated swap

i'm merging my 2.5 rs wiring with the 04-05 usdm wrx wiring for my 97 ver. 4 jdm 2.0 motor to work. would i be needing any wires that go to the fender from the 04-05 wrx?

i am also merging the 04-05 wrx engine wiring to the jdm motor so that i can get it to pass emissions through the wrx ecu.

and would anyone know which wires i need to merge?

Wow, sounds tough. If you intend to use the WRX engine and ECU, I think you need the complete harness that runs under the left fender and through the firewall in front of the passenger seat (but, not under the right side fender). I assume you're using a late model engine harness too?

Have you thought about not bothering to merge but, to use an entire WRX harness? The emissions controls requires lines to the fuel tank and the evap tank under the car in the back.

Yeah, I'm thinking you want an entire WRX harness front to back and then you just tack on the parts you need for the RS. I'm sure you can do it the way you are. It just seems like more work. If you have a wrecked 04 parts car, why not swap everything over? That's what I did.

this won't work
the cam pickup points are different on the v.4 and the cams are a different diameter (cam gears not interchangable with newer cam gears)

the crank wheel is also different but its easier to change

Just throwing it out there, maybe you should listen to Jaxx before you hack up a harness and find out it won't work... or sell the JDM motor and just get a USDM motor, they're better anyways unless you have an EJ207. (which you don't)

I've done this a few times but the 05+ RS cam gear might also work. Never tried but it has the triggers and bolts up the same as the WRX. But one is SOHC and one is DOHC.

Your original question, Yes, you will need the front harnes, the section that goes through the drivers side fender.

you will have to run a US WRX throttle body ,and as Jaxx said a cam gear that fits your cam with the WRX triggers. the crank trigger is different as well. turbomike as a thread about this.

You'll also need to change the timing gear on the crank as the old cars use a six tooth design.

Get a USDM motor, you'll save yourself a huge headache.

i would but this motor is fully built and came with a tranny only for 2grand and it has less than 20k on it. and it came with a lot of goodies such as: vf23, 850cc fuel injectors, stage 3 excedy clutch and 14lb flywheel and on top of it its fully built... i have a set of obx 04 wrx cams so that wouldnt be a problem switching out. and i really dont want to give up on this swap.

would i only need the us wrx throttle body? or would i "HAVE" to get the us wrx intake manifold as well?

if it were me, i would sell the motor and keep all the fun parts ( tranny, turbo, injectors, ect.) and pick up a usdm 2.0.

or i would hunt for the correct wiring harness for the motor. but you wont pass emissions.

good luck with the swap

USDM WRX manifold has offset bolt pattern. EJ20K has inline bolt pattern. So, no you cannot use the EJ205 manifold on an Ej20K engine.

This swap isn't going to work the way that you are trying to do it.

yeah but i dont think the usdm wrx internals can handle the turbo with stock internals and i dont have time to do a rebuild.

if you use the larger injectors and not running huge amounts of boost i doubt that the wrx internals would be destroyed.

hm, im dont know, ive heard of WRX motors being able to take that, as long as you have the fuel and tuning done.

im in the process of putting my EJ20K into my 97 coup, but im using a hybrid of the USDM and JDM engine harnesses.

im not sure what the stock boost is on those turbo's, i heard it was less, but could be wrong. are you using a wrx or sti k series?

im sure that some subaru guru will know what the factory boost is, or post the question in the pre-02 powertrain forum since it deals with the EJ20G and K

im hoping to have mine up by next week, so i'll know if i do.

but i know the WRX bottom end can handle 18psi if its tuned correctly.
there's a guy selling one locally tuned for 18psi with stock internals....

I've been running a VF23 on my 02 USDM WRX swap for years now and have not had any issues. Aso running a dumb light Fidenza flywheel.

If you got a killer deal on it get the right engine management for it. I'm sure you can find the needed bits to run the stock ECU.
