Exclamation Car didn't shut down after turning off ignition

I warmed up the car and drove a couple of blocks down the street this afternoon. About ten minutes after I turned off the car, I started up the car again but the car sounded horrible. It was shuddering and making sounds I have never heard before. I turned off the ignition and took the key out, but the car kept trying to start. The starter just kept going. Everything eventually stopped after a about a minute.

One explanation could be dieseling, but that doesn't seem to account for the starter in runaway mode. This is on a 97 Legacy GT with 90K miles. My dad suggested I try using Lucas Oil fuel cleaner a few times as he thinks its carbon buildup. Should I bother taking the car to the dealer right now for immediate diagnosis or wait to see if this happens again?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like something in the key-switch wasn't working correctly. Are these 2 separate issues? A dieseling engine needs to have its' timing belt checked. What's the interval on a 97?

i know when a subaru's battery starts to die it will run like absolute crap and it sounds like its running on water and sputters and shakes, but the part with it trying to keep starting thats real weird

This may be way out in left field, but I suspect that the potential buyer turned on the ignition in such a way that caught it between on and off. Person didn't know that the car takes a couple of cranks to turn over.

Btw, the timing belt was changed 2.5 years ago so that's not the problem.

yah, sounds like a wireing problem, the car didn't by chance have a aftermarket security system at one time did it? it seems like they could be two different problems that happened at the same time, but both could have been caused by the same thing(like the battery) did you try cranking the car while it was trying to self start to see if the switch was sticking on something? or did you just take the key out and wait till it died.

Keyless entry is stock. No aftermarket security at all. Battery is new. I took the key out and waited till the engine died. As of this morning, I have had no problems. I honestly think the car is fine and that the event occurred by an absolute fluke. Just my kind of luck for something like this to happen when someone is looking to buy the car
