Default Testing my 5D Mkll and suction cup mount.

We are getting ready for the Texas Mile. I purchased a suction cup mount for my camera to put inside the cars that we are running. Distorto and I did some testing of over the weekend.

Some high speed runs in the vibe!

Yup I agree. I bought one over the weekend. I don't think I will be mounting it on the out side of anycars at the Texas mile. I could just see that now, head mount breaks off at 180mph smashing my camera to a million pieces on the air strip. No thanks.

My god I would never trust that mount, even with my old Rebel XT.

Good luck.

Well, I own a 5d as well, I would never trust it to just a suction cup mount, maybe if it was tethered? Cool idea though. If you plan on putting these inside of cars I would think about something else to hold it down just in case, it would be a shame to see a $2500 camera fly out the window.

Then again I have put my Mamiya RZ67p2 in some pretty sketchy situations so I guess its not that crazy.

Well the suction cup is very strong I could bend that hood of that car with that cup, vacuum pump makes it incredibly strong however the weakest point is the head with weight of my camera near the limit putting stress on it. Filmtools has some others that would be better for out side the car but I would not run my camera at a high speed.

For the Texas Mile I will be mounting the camera on the inside of the cars.

For JustA4's wild beast STi I will mount it similar to the in car video. On jbsteven's Gallardo and GT it will be more tricky as both have a vertical window right behind head rest.

can you use a better head?

and yeah, I'd do that in the car no problem, but for the outside I'll stick with my gopro as well. Even with insurance, I'm not willing to loose my baby for as long as it'd take to get a replacement these days.

I feel the same the inside isn't going to be a concern. We only did the out side shoots just to see what it looked like. Filmtools says this head is rated at 6lbs my camera plus the 17-40mm came in at 4.5lbs so I think it will hold find in side the car. As far as a different head I haven't really considered looking into it. Like you said if I want out side action then gopros would work fine.

I'd find some cover for the backside, one rogue rock could destroy your view finder.
