There are a few reasons why you shouldn't have a Monte Cristo sandwich. First of all, it wastes precious jam that could be used on toast or a PBJ. Secondly, some reports are circling of rapid oxidation and fires resulting from powdered sugar reacting with ham.

Powdered sugar? I've always used a mixture of mayonnaise and Mrs. Butterworth's so I think I'm in the clear.

I went to a Honda/Acura Service Advisor class once in the mid 90s. There were guys there from WI, IL, and MI. As me and a guy from elsewhere within our dealership group went to lunch, one guy from the seminar asked if he could tag along. we said sure. We went to a TGI Fridays. To paint a proper picture, the Tag-along guy had black, feathered 70s hair parted down the middle, glasses that had a bronzish tint, and he never took off his Member's Only-type jacket. Friday's had a Motne Cristo sandwich on the menu. As soon as the tag along guy say that, he got all excited: "Ooo!! They've got teh MONTE! The Monte Crist-O! Wait until I call my wife tonight and tell her I had the MONTE!!" He ordered it as, "The MONTE," too. The waitress asked if he wanted the Monte Cristo snadwich, and he said yes.

It was weird. I will always think of that when I see a Monte Cristo sandwich on a menu.
