Question How good is the 02 WRX?

Ok, here it is....I am in the process of trading in my 99 Cobra Vert to purchase a WRX. How good is this car really? Is it tough to get one of these cars in to the 13's in the 1/4? From what I hear they tear up the autocross course which I plan to do. The Cobra at this point is no longer practical with a child and an uphill driveway. My car is due in on March 14th. Platinum Silver w/spoiler. And yes, I plan to mod it.

Well if it is anything like the RS of today it will hit 13's without breaking a sweat. Adam Bloom does it in like 12's, so it is possible! Congrats with the purchase! and Welcome to the club.

Welcome to the club and I look forward to seeing you with your WRX. Which clubs to you auto-x with?

I'll be in my silver WRX wagon in GS.

You may need to give it a little while for the aftermarket to provide go fast parts and upgrades...but there are some things in the works.

It runs mid 14's bone stock from what we hear (there has yet to be something published officially) and believe 13's should be real easy, like the DSM's.

Plan on exhaust giving a 15hp increase and intake giving 5-10 more.

Stock this car has been tested at 0-60 from 5.5 to 5.9 seconds (the 5.5's were done in drag race type conditions) so it'll be plenty fast as a family hauler.

The thing I gream about is pulling up next to a GT in my Silver WRX wagon and taking it off the line. And it will happen because where I live, there's stop light racing a-plenty.

Jeez.. Do I have to rephrase it?

A 'stock' GT.

Your GT? Hmmm that's going to take a little work....but it'll happen in the modification steps I have planned.

My car's only gonna be in Stock form for one year. Next year, when the aftermarket is here, it's gonna be Mod.

Isn't there a dedicated forum for topics like this? (so us bitter people don't have to keep listening to KC).

Talking

KC,(sorry for the slow response) I autocrossed a couple times last year at Otis Airforce base one the Cape. It was an absolute blast, even driving a 3700lb Cobra. I do not plan on going back though after witnessing one guy hit the barrier another shoot into the woods and finally a friend of mine total his car. That location needs more space for run off. This year I plan on attending as many events as I can as it seems to be the best bang for buck racing around. The reason I asked about the 13 sec 1/4 mile is that I plan on embarassing a couple Cobra owners who for some unknown reason can't get into the 13's. When you talk about exhaust, what parts do you mean? Header back or cat back? What kind of cost would I be looking at? Also I presume when you speak of the intake you mean everything before the throttle body and not the manifold itself.

Thanks for your input as I come from the Mustang world.

Ohh Otis... Do I know you?

I had the Black 2.5Rs that ran the few times there. I was there and saw the Mod car hit the jersey barrier at the 1st of the year, and I saw pics of (Mikes?) car all wrecked up the weekend after (when they initiated the new course design..even then 3 cars went off but with no damage).

Otis is very intimidating and you need to know the extents of your car if you run there (minus the occasional mechanical/brake failure). I tell everyone who runs there, you just want to see how your car handles, not get best time...that comes later.

Parts:
Downpipe
CatBack
Highflow cats (Maybe)
Manual Boost Controller
Intake
Upgraded Plugs/Wires

All this should be around $1.5K - $2K

The WRX runs a stock 14.5 - 14.6 1/4 mi. With the above mods, it should do 13's no prob.

KC, I was there the day the Bug Eye(?) hit the wall. I actually got it on video. I don't know if you will remember a Red Cobra Convertible running the course. One day we had about 7 Cobra's there (kinda hard to miss). When you refer to a mechanical/brake failure are you talking about Dan R? Were you there for that one? What times we you running at Otis? In my stock vert I ran a 97 or 98 (can't remember) on the second time there.

I was running 94's 95's. It is a fun and very fast course.

You really have to be paying attention to what your car is doing.

Yeah, Dan, that's his name. No I wasn't there. I saw the pics the following week when he showed up.

See ya there sometime with the WRX.
