So I had an 04 sti from 05-07. It was my baby, I loved that car. To buy a house I ended up selling it so I didn't have the payment anymore and in its place I got a responsible accord. Last February I got the subaru itch again and sold the accord and bought my 02 bugeye wrx. It has 81K and runs great except for the constant P0300 thru P0304 codes i keep getting (think i need to change my plugs). I have no car payments anymore.
I LOVED my sti and the wrx I have now is also great, but I still miss my sti. I cant decide if I should bother modding my wrx anymore past stage 2 because I am afraid I will be wasting my money if I upgrade my turbo and such because it still wont feel like my old sti. The feel of the sti is something I think the bugeye just cant match and I guess I am looking to be convinced otherwise. What do you think? Will I always be wanting an STi or can the bugeye be a viable substitute? My main issue with my wrx is that it isnt in pristine condition like my sti was... without fresh paint it will never look that nice. These STi's < $18K make me crazy. ![]()

it's not a question of NEED. it's whether or not you WANT one. none of us need one

I suggest if it's well within your budget and you plan on modding it get the STI, the drive train and all the other things the STI has over the wrx are always nice too I'm sure |

yup. no headaches from worrying about whether or not the trans is going to grenade, or what kind of bbk to get, or needing a bigger turbo to get 300whp.

I wish I would have bought an STI in the first place. My 06 WRX was great but the STI is a world of difference.

Depends what your goals are...
If you're into the whole horsepower bragging thing, the STi certainly has advantages, but if you just want a fun car you can modify, nothing wrong with the ol' bugeye. 6 years, 95K miles, ~600 autox runs and no major failures FTW. |

^i do like the feel of the stage 2 sti...
i imagine if I mod the suspension on the wrx i will be happy but im not sure how long. Also, I prefer the cheap wrx insurance over the STI ins. |

I have an 03 WRX with 05 STI guts. Everything is STI except the dashboard and seats. Insurance (not that I worry about insurance cost 'cause I'm old) is WRX insurance and it'll do anything a regular STI will do. You can always start with a WRX and build it up over time. I rather enjoyed the build though there's nothing easy about subaru swaps. Subaru seems to go out of their way to make it difficult.

I have had STis and the ONLY thing I miss is the 6 speed trans. Sure the brakes are nice and the electronics for the handling, but I can live without them. I always wish I had the 6 speed in my WRX though.

I had a 2002 bugeye pushing 340 whp. I was without a car payment for about a year and it felt great. I needed a daily driver and thought that raw fuel fumes probably isn't good for my 2 kids. Sold it and bought an 08 STi. I love my Sti. I can probably achieve the HP as with my 02 and still keep the stock DP or at least with a high flow CAT. Reliable, fast, fun. But I still miss the my 02 and $0 payments. Definitely at toss up.

No, you do not really need an STi.

Were you thinking of picking up the black 05 at Matt Slap?
I drove by there this evening at around 9pm and it wasn't in it's usual spot, although, I think they move it back during the night away from the street. |

No one can truly know this but you, for financial reasons...but I say, if you can afford it, then DO it. You only live once! Just don't break the bank by havin one!

My biggest regret with my 04 WRX is the daily drive with the transmission. This has nothing to do with power or strength. It is just not pleasant to drive (loud, hard to shift, poor ratios, etc.). I wished I had bought an STI for this reason alone.
However, I also don't like car payments so if I can't by a car cash then I keep saving till I can. With all that said, I still enjoy the WRX especially the sunroof. |

If you can easily afford it, do it. If you're gonna stretch your budget AT ALL, don't do it in this economy.
That being said, penfed.org has 3.99% used car loans for up to 60 months. Online application and only $5 to join. |

whoa wait... you ditched your sti for a bugeye? whys that? BTW, i have a WRX and i love it to death... although its pretty much been completely done over, sometimes i wish i had the STi for reasons such as stronger knuckles, drivetrain and wheel bearings... that alone is enough reason for me to switch, but i have way too much money tied up in this car. at this point though, i might as well just upgrade to the STi knuckles/wheel bearings. whats another 1000 gonna hurt after what i've done... lol |
