Default Bad exhaust valve guide?

Took my exhaust manifold off today to do a few things without it being in the way, and happened to take a look in each exhaust port. I noticed one valve has what I believe is the valve guide moved out into the exhaust port 1/4" to 1/2" more than all the other valves.

Now I'm not sure if this is the valve guide. It looks like a sleeve that the valve stem moves in and out of that is pressed into the cylinder head, and (in all the other vavles) pokes into the exhaust port about 1/4". I'll try to get a picture tomorrow if I can.

No CELs or problems except for a rough idle that I chalked up to Group-N engine mounts. I want to make sure this is a real problem before I go to the dealership and attempt to get warrantee work done If this is a bad guide, what are the implications as far as the work that would need to be done to fix it? Could this cause other damage to the engine, or would it just affect that valve... I honestly don't know how long it's been like this.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Bad guides smoke and you'd lose compression. It might bend a valve, too. Do you have anything more obvious than a rough idle and how it looks in the port? It's easy to imagine something wrong with a block that indeed makes as much noise as these .

The car seems to have as much (or as little ) power as normal. I do get some hesitation rarely, but I have heard others getting the same thing, and it's never that bad anyway.

I did once hear what I thought was piston slap just after starting the engine, but it went away quickly and I've never hear it again. That was probably a year ago or more. Other than that it seems to make the typical sewing machine sounds I hear in other Subarus.

No smoke that I can tell. Really if I didn't notice the difference in that one valve I would have thought everything was normal

pull the valve cover off and look at it from that side. Note any differences.

If it comes to pulling the valve cover I'll just take it in to the dealership since it's just under the 5 year / 100,000km warranty still. I'll probably go talk to the service dept. soon and see what they think.

Anyway here are a couple of pictures:

"Bad" valve:

All the other valves look like this:

You can see it's moved out about 2 or 3 times as much as the others

Maybe it turned off with the exhaust valve open? It could just be in that sequence of the 4 stroke system.

Wow. I've never seen this, but also haven't seen these heads by the thousands, either. My 80k stock block looks fine. What I was worried about what the white coating on the valves and its just boron from the oil.

"Naughty ValveGuides"---you just don't KNOW they're bad. *Bowww chika bow wowww.*

I had someone watch the valve while I turned the engine over, and the guide didn't move. The valve still operated fine and wasn't getting held up by the guide either, so it doesn't seem like its hurting anything as long as it stays where it is.

The dealership says they won't do anything unless there's a driveability problem and they can trace it with something like a misfire CEL. Not like I expected much in the first place; I guess time will tell. They did say they see this on model year 2000ish 2.5RS and 06 Legacies sometimes.

If something blows up (not that I expect it to) I'll update this thread
