Hello, I've searched the forum and google for answers on this and found a few, but not much luck for military exemptions or whatever, so sorry if this is a repost. I've got orders to go to Travis AFB, CA from Whiteman AFB, MO in Oct and since I'm military I can pretty much keep my car registered in my home state which is OK and they have no inspections whatsoever. Right now I have an 05 WRX with the catless cobb stage 2 package with sf intake and an HKS ssqv.
If I'm military and I have my car registered in another state, will I still have to get smog tested? One of my coworkers from SF says so, but he's still not completely sure. I also heard there's some stupid ride height law there. Is that true?

I believe that the car will not have to get a smog check, unless you some day register the car in California. http://www.smogngo.com/faq.php#a2
I don't know about the ride height, I have seen it enforced on T.V. once. Sounds like a nice car! Thanks for doing a good job. Last edited by onboostsubie; 04-01-2009 at 01:26 PM. Reason: errors |

Oh no worries. For some reason that teh I said was tototally accidental and I'm not sure if the forum is doing that automatically, but I usually read over my posts pretty well before I submit and I thought it was good, but I guess not. lol

You can keep your out of state plates, but theres a stupid rule for getting on base. The rule is in order to get base stickers you have to get a smog certificate saying you passed. I was stationed at Travis for 5 years and actually am still in the local area. My suggestion is to keep you Whiteman stickers for as long as you can. haha
When do you get here? You should stop by my shop, its literally down the road from base. |

Well I guess I'm gonna have to put my stock dp back on because Whiteman got rid of their DOD stickers. I had one on my old car, but they just phased them out when I got the WRX due to the stickers making us higher risk because of the type of aircraft that is at the base. So, my car has never had a DOD sticker on it. lol
I plan on trading it in for an '05 STi when I get back from deployment and I might sell my catless dp for a catted one. Probably will get a QTP dp as well later down the road with more mods and just change the dps out every 2 years I'm due for a new DOD sticker. I'm sure they'll wanna smog test me every time I have to get a sticker to. Will my other mods fail a smog too? I would think my ssqv might due to the change of a:f when open, but don't know about the Cobb intake. Never had to smog test before, so I don't know the process. Oh, and I guess my second post never got posted some how, but I meant to say thanks for the info and yeah, she's been loyal for me for the past 2 1/2 years that I've owned it. Almost feels like betrayal to wanna trade her in for something better. Um, I'll get there at the end of October and I am so excited. Rural Missouri sucks. Hell, we only have like 1 AWD dyno out here and they aren't even a protuner. Thanks for the help guys and I'll be sure to stop by the shop when I get there. Catted downpipe won't do it- you can't have ANY mods except catback exhaust in California. Nothing. Nyet. Except of course for a few intakes with CARB EO numbers.

Just found this actually, so maybe I'm off the hook...
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforce/a/nodecal.htm Bought my WRX the December before that happened, but never realized it was Air Force wide. I bet they'd still make me have some sort of retarded smog sticker on my car or something, just like having a MSF sticker on your motorcycle before riding it on base here. Man, beautiful state, but your laws absolutely blow. I've got other problems too, such as dealing with CA gun laws and stuff, but that's another story, different forum. ![]() |
