Default 05 STi...UR GT40R TS....Element Built/Tuned...pump/Q16...revisited

I wanted to put up another thread for the tune I received yesterday by Phil. I came back down to him with a new fuel pump (switched to bosch044) and a larger exhaust housing on the turbo, hoping to free up some more horsepower. I had in the .85 a/r on the gt4088r and I just recently put in the 1.06 a/r and force some boost through my stock valves!!

I will go back to the first tune back in May of 08, to fill everyone in on what had happened…on pump gas we made a nice 470ish whp and and back it down to 45xwhp and 380ft/tq …I was happy a nice daily driver shell 93 oct map…then we switched to c16 and we were making good power until the spool starting to get worse and the car was starting to det with 16 deg of timing, so we knew something was up….we hit 555whp and 449ft/tq and back it down 520ishwhp 415ft/tq to keep everything nice and safe…at the end of the tune Phil and I both knew something was wrong, come to find out a few months later my flex pipe on my uppipe had cracked, so it was leaking air and causing some problems…I had the uppipe sent to UR and they fixed it right away and put in straight pipes instead of the flex pipes in (really impressed with their dedication to their customers)

Well on to YESTERDAY

With high hopes of making some good power the car was strapped to the dyno and we started making some pulls and on pump gas we were seeing full boost at right around 46-4700 rpms on the hydra with 23psi reading and boost gauge reading 25psi…really impressed with the responsiveness of the 1.06 a/r

On pump we finished with 451whp and 418ft/tq….with a massive gain in spool and such a larger power band, also a gain of 40ft/tq from the last time it was tuned!! So the whp stayed about the same but I was happy because the car would be a lot more powerful and peppy with slight throttle pulls...and you can see I have over 300whp at 4500 rpms which is awesome.

On to the race gas, Phil wanted me to pick up Q16, so I did and that’s what he tuned me on. With the race gas we stopped at 573whp and 499ft/tq. That is a jump from last time along with 85ft/tq from last tune and a larger power band as well…I forgot to ask phil when exactly we were seeing 29psi but I know it was right 50-5100rpms, which is amazing for a 40r!! We stopped at 29psi because my avcr was pretty much pegged wide open, the boost controller wouldn’t let us up the boost anymore…my car with the stock valves doesn’t like any timing on the top end so we could just push more boost but the controller was holding us back…if we could have upped the boost 2 psi I would have maybe pushed us over the 600whp, we were seeing 20whp from each psi of boost with the 40r. I am very happy with the power we uncovered so I am proud to say I made 573 on that heartbraker of a dynojet...Phil said that this tune is much better than last time, the fuel map with the smaller exhaust housing had some odd dips and bumps, but this time around the tune is really solid!!!

Maybe someday I will have the heads redone and put in larger valves and make even more power....only time will tell

Also for anyone that doesn’t know this dyno 600whp has proven 140traps in other STi’s with deep 10’s…so with that said 573whp should put me somewhere mid/low 10’s @ 136-137 trap

I also wanted to thank Phil for taking the time to always helping me out via phone/fax/email He is the best....always keeping me in the loop while he is tuning the car and teaching me...I must say that Element Tuning puts together a great motor because this thing has been through hell and back and after the dyno session was over the car is running great and not burning any oil !!! I would say if you want a motor that will last I wouldn't go anywhere else!!

Here is the dyno sheet of yesterdays tune...the printer there ran out of ink so I went and colored in the q16 pull on the top end so everyone could see

Nice power, and that is pretty good HP at 4500 RPM for such a large turbo.
Your comment about the AVCR is interesting. If the AVCR was indeed at 100% duty cycle, that means there is maximum hold pressure going to the external wastegate (top). If you are unable to get more boost, you may have to upgrade the wastegate spring (to a higher rate spring).

In an external wastegate setup there is boost pressure on the top of the valve plus the spring pushing against the lower pressure port, so they usually don't 'blow open'. If the AVCR was actually at maximum duty cycle the wastegate would generally be closed... which would mean your boost limit is due to some other factor. To test it out you could disconnect the wastegate line and see if it hits more then 29psi.

thanks for the comments Jeff

yes the avcr was maxed out...i currently have 18 pound spring in each wastegate...right now the wastgate is going off the bottom feed for smooth boost responce...i belive Phil said the avcr couldn't advance further because of the single port, he said his eboost2 is the same way...maybe Phil will chime in and give more of a technical description

Impressive gain for the hotside swap ~ congrats. My tuner is about three hours from the house, but I usually trailer mine. It does make for a long day, but I'm sure the drive back was fun.

yeah everything worked out well...thank god...so i would say 1.06 or 1.16 with the 40r is the way to go

the ride home was fun, esp since my g/f was in the car and she got to feel what race gas can do with a built motor and a 40r...did about 2 pulls and it was time to fill up on pump and switch the map

it was wet so we had to skip that part...but yeah that race gas is pretty nuts on the street....the power doesn't even let you focus on anything other than shifting

400 on that dyno is pretty good, i am sure your car is quite fun as well

It was detuned this last week down to 91oct and low boost. This is my first year for Emissions testing, so I 'm hoping I can make it through. The tags are due this month.
