Default 99 JDM WRX longblock swapped into 02 WRX trouble

Hi all,
I'm just trying to figure some things out and need some help.

I purchased a longblock out of a 1999 JDM WRX, to replace my 02 WRX longblock that had a spun bearing. Everything bolted up ok, but I guess there are enough differences between the heads/blocks to cause some minor issues.

I was running a stage 2 tune on the 02 motor and having no issues at all with it. I still had the rear O2 sensor, with a spacer, and was not getting any DTC (CELs). I like to keep the O2 sensor installed as it wasn't showing a CEL with the last motor, and might let me know if something goes drastically wrong with the only CAT in the system. It is now throwing P0420 and P0136 codes with the JDM motor.

Last weekend I took it to a shop to get it dyno'ed to check how it was running. Unfortunately the AF ratio was rising (running lean) at high RPMs and it was detonating, so we only did one half-hearted pull and took it off the dyno.

I plan on taking this in to get tuned shortly so this might be a non-issue, but I'd still like to know (and give my tuner a heads up).

So, what are the differences between the heads/block of the 99 JDM WRX vs the 02 USDM WRX? Everything attached to the intake manifold was moved to the JDM motor from the 02 motor. Nothing except the long block was used from the JDM motor.

Thanks!

I'm guessing that the cams, compression ratio and the ports (flow/V.E.) all changed. A retune should do the trick.

Hi all,
One of the helpful people here PM'ed me that the cam pulleys are different on the 99 WRX engine and this may be partly causing my trouble. They would trigger the cam sensor differently.

Can anyone confirm this? I did not swap the cam pulleys between the old and new heads. I would have thought this would have caused more of an issue than just O2 sensor CELs, and would cause a very rough running engine.

Could it be as long as I use the proper cam pulleys with the proper heads I should be ok? That is, although the cam pulleys and sensor are different, they end up triggering at the same place?

Thanks for your help!
