Default oil smell and consumption only when coming to a stop?

On my built motor I am losing oil approximately 1 qt every 750 miles. There is no oil in the breather lines, no oil in the intake, or intercooler piping. However, when I come to a stop (usually I am engine braking in 3rd gear then I clutch in and brake) I can smell oil as the fumes "catch up" to me at the stop light/sign.

I have never seen any smoke out the exhaust. Cold start, hot start, driving it hard, etc. I have had buddies follow me around while I beat on the car and nothing.

I was thinking about pulling the downpipe in case the turbo's seal is leaking into the turbine housing, but wasn't sure.

That's a lot of oil, Ben, even for a built motor. What kind of snail is on there?

SZ55 bought from a friend used. could be the turbo I suppose, I had a VF39 one time that went out, but it leaked oil at hot idle, you could see it puffing out.

just want to update that this has since stopped, and oil consumption is appx 1/2 qt per 1000 miles. my clearances are pretty loose so I'm OK with this.

that problem is solved, now I have a new enemy... upgraded piston and valvetrain noise and the stock knock sensor are fighting like two scorned lovers on Jerry Springer! But that's a story for another day.

You will see more blowby if you do a lot of engine braking.

Running in to the same issue currently (less than 1,000 miles on my new built motor) Hopefully it goes away as yours did

My motor used to consume more oil than what I anticipated. It wasn't until I tuned for 25+psi where the motor started to fully break in. I never ran synthetic oil and glad I didn't.

Check that turbo anyway. If you smell the oil then it is there. You want to avoid that oil getting in the combustion chamber and lowering your octane. The built motor may turn into your broke motor when you have enough detonation when your hitting full boost. Don't loose thousands of dollars of work and time for possible leaky seals. Good luck.
