Default pulled over on the way from San Diego...

hey guys I had a question, on my car i have 3" down pipe and a HKS carbon fiber exhaust blacked out tail lights and limo tint all the way around, now I know on the front two windows it's illegal, I could care less, but I was told its legal on the back and the two back rear passenger windows. Any ways I got pulled over today on my way back from San Diego, and the CHP's officer told me that it is illegal to have a modified tail pipe limo tint anywhere on the car and modified tail lights....He didn't write me a ticket thank God but I found it odd, I knew California was a lot more strick about all that stuff but give me a break...any way just didn't know if that was true or if he was full of it?

not sure about the limo tint, but i know some states require a red flector of some type on the rear of the car. the tinted taillights would technically break that law

gotchya, I mean the Officer could have been a dick, but let me go, which confused me cause he never said anything about speeding maybe he just wanted to make sure I wasn't drug running or smuggling illegals?

Ya, you cant do anything to cars in CA anymore. They will outlaw installing a non-oem head unit and floor mats at some point

According to an episode of Rob & Big, they cop told them it is illegal to have window tint anywhere, or maybe just illegal to have limo on any windows. Your location says Mesa, so if you still have AZ plates, the guy can't ticket you for **** there. I could be wrong, I am not a Police Officer.

yeah he cant do anything if the car is registered in az. Limo tint as far as i know is not illegal or else the LIMOs in ca would all be getting tickets. Remember you can paint your rear window BLACK if you wanted to, as long as u had both side view mirrors working.

tail lights have been illegal to black out forever in California, as are headlamps.

he was also correct about the tail pipe... thats one thing theyve been doing since the early 90s out there. I wonder if they ever pull over motorcycles with their modified pipes?

in california it is illegal to have your front windows tinted at all actually. I had my subaru out here for almost 2 years with AZ plates and was never bothered with a full exhaust and dark tint all around. When I got my new Audi here.. the dealer wouldn't tint the fronts.. I have fairly dark tint on the rest of the car.. After market places will tint the fronts for you but I figured it's not worth the hassle. As far as the exhaust law goes here.. to the best of my knowledge, which I learned on NASIOC before even moving here was, it is illegal " " to replace and OE exhaust which is in good working order for an aftermarket one. There is supposed to be something wrong so they say to modify it. But they are fairly lax about that as long as it's not obnoxious. The legal limit here is 91 DB's.

he probably wanted to see if you lived here. Lot's of people do an don't switch.. or come here from AZ and drive like ass hats. AZ plates or not, they enforce their rules of the road when you drive on their streets.. as well as beach booz ban laws and such.. no tourist breaks.. good thing to keep in mind this summer visiting here. They want your money..

a few years ago when i lived in monterey bay, a navy girl with texas plates got a ticket for having her front windows tinted. they weren't limo, they were just tinted. so by having limo all the way around, you probably made him nervous. heard they outlawed it a years ago cause chp was killed cause he couldn't see the gun pointing at him threw the dark windows. that story sounded a little false when i heard it back then, but it makes sense.... kinda

Well I was going to post a heads up as I know alot of you travel to California.
I have limo all the way around except the windshield. I just roll them down when I spot a cop. But.. Its also illegal in Az as well.

Arizona: Front Side Windows Must allow more than 33% of light in.

California has a huge crack down going down right now. If the car doesnt look OEM, Your going to get stopped. Even if you have just rims on your car. They are going to stop you. Be glad you didnt get your hood popped, They could write you for your catlessness.... Fed Laws,
I know a few subie owners that have gotten towed, 80% of us have been stopped just driving without breaking any laws. Hell I have been pulled over more in the last month then last 10 years. Last time they(CHP) check to see if my exhaust silencer was installed then let me go. The state just held a trainning class on our cars to teach the police about our tricks. So Subaru is the new honda in california.

So if you take a trip to california. Your car doesnt look oem, expect to be pulled over. Make sure your under the 95dba limit. And try and roll stock.. otherwise they are doing the "pay to play"

California Vehicle Code
27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

Most police I know in AZ dont care unless your being an ass.

Something to cheer you up..
cheer you up...

CHP and some local pd's do reg check points to combat that. You think its all good rolling in to a DUI check point. Then they ask you for Lic and Reg. After that you'll be lucky if your not towed for driving in california without a valid lic.

Motorcycles are getting nailed left and right too. Its funny to hear them bitch about running a full open system "motogp" look and them cry about getting a ticket.

H.D.'s are getting stopped as well.

Also....
If you do get a ticket you can go to the state ref and they can cert your cbe. So if you get stopped you can hand the cop the cert paperwork.

Problem is that when you get a ref ticket you can drive the car till its been state inspected. Sucked when the governor shut all the ref stations down few months back from lack of funding...

This seems a bit extreme to me. I was never touched with the Subaru and I see tons of cars all the time that are super moded that don't get hassled at all.
Many times right in front of the CHP or local PD. I have been having to drive a lot more for work lately around the county with our company doing more with less in this economy... I'd say 50% of the cars I see are not in compliance with their crazy laws.. and those are never the ones pulled over.. It's either the crapy junkers with peoples citizen papers being checked south of I8 or the really high end cars grossly speeding on the freeway. Or with the new law, omg girls texting while driving.. I guess were just more chill around here.

something about your car or driving has to be obnoxious.

Go over to i-club and do a search. My car looked pretty out of hand before. Never stopped.

Went wingless, and oem hood and getting stopped all the time. I even took my Ti JIC off in favor for my STi CBE

The one CHP motor officer told me they are stopping everything and be expected to get stopped again. They are doing the F&F 5 crackdown. Plus it not all money driven, CHP gets money when you reg your car. Its says it in the item line when they charge you.

In CA, the legal limit for the driver's and front passenger windows is 70% NET, which means taking the light reduction from the glass itself plus the film's reduction of light, cannot reduce the light by more than 70%. The slight amount of color in the glass from the factory reduces some light coming through the window to around 83%, but this figure can be higher or lower depending on the individual glass itself. In real world terms, this means no film on those front windows, except for clear film. If the glass is absolutely clear, then there is 70% film that can be installed.

As for the side and back windows, current CA laws allow limo tint on those windows PROVIDED the car has both left and right side mirrors.

In AZ, the legal limit for the fronts are 33% NET and the side and back windows can be as dark as you want provided left and right side mirrors are on the car.

its been illegal for front windows since i remember (back in the 80's). so that whole cop story is an urban legend.

GO CALIFORNIA!!!

That state will be the single downfall of this whole country, once CA does something, other states jump on board, then it's only a matter of time until it's federal.

dude, where do you live in California. The things you say are pretty extreme and where I live, I'm not seein it man. Plus, there is 200 things that H3 could have been pulled over for.. you are seriously reaching with that. I can pretty much tell you people aren't being pulled over for rims and a chrome tip on their exhaust.. It often comes like that from the dealer.

everywhere has specific laws when it comes to cars.. AZ is no expection. Either you follow them or not.. Either you care about a potential ticket or not and that's about it. It's really not so different in CA than most other places. Az is esp lax compared to most but playing catchup.. stay tuned.

Read the last link.... Also I listen in and hear why people are being stopped. I have run a few trunking digital scanners.

As for the other guy. I'm just not as kool as him. So he feels like he has to make up for his lacking areas with internet tought guy stuff. Just look at his past. You will see he's the biggest tool in the shed.
