Angry What the heck happend to my rev limiter?

Okay, I was driving down the street, when some idiot came into my lane w/out signaling and so I punched the engine and moved into the other lane. For a brief period my engine revs to like 6500, I noticed while glanced down after making my maneuver to avoid the idiot. This has happened before. I'm not even aggresively downshifting, but I don't see or feel my rev limiter kick in. The engine seems fine. This has happend a couple times before.

our tachs aren't super-accurate. idle says 500, S-AFC reads 700. my fuel cut-off is 6500ish... S-AFC reads 6250! dont worry.. everything is ooook.

I noticed that too....the Redline is supposed to be 6200 but the tach will go to 6500. I had to learn to ignore the redline on the tach when shifting.

Kinda annoying if you ask me.

Checked the rev limiter rpms with my scan tool the other day... Tach read 6500, scanner read 6450. Not too far off.

Need to kick it up to 7500, that damn rev limiter!

talk to the 'ganz (i guess that's like the fonz)...he can send your ECU out to be re-mapped and raise the rev limiter.

the EJ valvetrain is supposedly good for an 8000 rpm redline. our engines are VERY understressed from the factory.

can the stock fuel system support those higher rpms? if so i'd like to find out how to raise the rev limiter and does the proecm do this?

you rev limiter is 6450 because you have hte DOHC 2.5...the SOHC 2.5 redlines @ 6250.

remap your ECU and no the proecm chip won't remove the rev limiter.

If you do any major raising of the rev limiter. May I suggest the Cobb lightened valvetrain package? With going above 7000 RPM I would be worried about valve float...

RawCode -- with the smaller bore EJ engines (1.8, 2.0, 2.2), i don't think it would be an issue, provided you didn't hold the engine at 8000 for long periods of time. on an EJ25, anything over a 7000rpm cutoff, i would probably upgrade just to be on the safe side. the occasional quick run to a higher redline wouldn't do any harm, but holding it at or near engine speeds that high for extended periods probably would weaken the stock valve springs post haste.

True true... I was thinking more of my big block 2.5. Forgot to check what size engine you guys were chatting about.

There's not much point in revving past the set rev limit as our stock cams are pretty much out of breathe at this point. So it doesn't much matter if the materials can handle it, unless of course you've changed the cams.

Maybe checking the peak HP and TQ for a given RPM would be good also.

I have a 1.8l and according the specs, I get:
110 HP at 5600rpm
110 TQ at 4400rpm

I guess that anything over 5600rpm in my case is jut a waste of gas and risking premature wear or engine components. Then again, I may be wrong...

yeah, i forgot the stock cams are about as aggressive as a bic pen.

i was just speaking in general terms...yes the valvetrain is up to the task, but there's really no point, in terms of making more power. HOWEVER, i would like another 1000rpm to work with so that when my revs drop on up-shifts, i'm still in my power peak.

When you up-shift you want your revs to be at max torque not max horsepower. Shifting at or above redline is not always the fastest way to accelerate.
