Default OT: Buying used and crossing border

Did a search and no luck, must be someone here who has done this

How would I cross the border back to canada if I purchased a 2nd set of rims used?

Would I need to come up with some sort of scribbled reciept from the seller, or can it be categorized as a personal item. Not an ebay item but from classifieds

I do not mind paying duty etc. but it seems kind of odd to do so with a 2nd hand item.

Cheers

You need an invoice from the seller to import things into Canada. You then pay duty on the value of the used parts.

Now, there's a caveat to that. If your price is too low, customs can give it a higher value for duty purposes. I had a guy check Nasioc once for a price on Rotas because my deal was so damn good.

Bottom line, be polite, have your paperwork ready, and you shouldn't have any problems. The more info you can find to back up your invoice, the better.

^ thought so

Thank you Hypa

I do a lot of regular business crossing the border and never thought about it since it was on company dime.

What Hypa said. I ran into problems because I didn't have an invoice for my used SSR Comps and got into a 2 hour hassle at Pt Roberts. Make sure you have the invoice.

You might want to print out the for sale ad if possible just to have a little extra info for them? Can't hurt...

Good call.

Im a bit iffy on this, because im used to 3 pages worth of forms and signatures etc.

A hand written note with a craigslist post is totally weird to me.

Any and all correspondence with the seller where it's clear what the agreed upon price is will do fine, along with the seller's contact information should the border people really want to be anal about it.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you're honest, up front and have your "paperwork".

Thanks again everyone.

option B is to hide them somewhere in the woods and make 4 trips (loading them into my spare tire space)

hehehe!

If you found the item on craigslist print out the ad, a scrawled note with two signatures means virtually nothing. Also, have the phone number of the seller handy, so if they decide that they want to talk to him they can.

You'll only get charged duty if the item you bought was manufactured outside of North America, however it seems unlikey that they would do a duty evaluation on rims.

Wouldnt the wheels have the country of origin printed on them somewhere anyways? If they really want to know where they were made they probably will find out.

They rarely ask. Out of like the 100 trips I'd made, I'd only got asked once where my downpipe was made from some customs guy who was interested in WRX's. It was an Invidia DP made in Japan, I just left the box at the postal office and I said it was made in USA. He did some online searching w/e... complete noob. Just went to the Invidia USA site, thought it was made in USA as well and I was on my way.

So yeah, don't worry about it.

I wouldn't take that chance 007.
For what?

Maybe a $70 savings?
And if you get caught, you get blacklisted?

Not worth it man. You're liable to get the same guy I got, who was a true boy scout and did check everything out.

The dumbass at pt roberts tried to tell me that I need to pay duty on a ****ing side pod for my cellphone I bought which cost like $15. Seriously dude, the time we spent arguing cost the government more money than what they would have gotten on say the extra $1.50 they may have charged.
