My call to Borla about headers

so yesterday my car developed a very bad rattle and some ticking, and lots of engine shaking..

I feared the worst, and assumed piston slap.

to my pleasent suprise, I noticed that I had a ~3" crack in my Borla headers along the metal brace. no big suprise.. anyone with borla headers knows this happens.

So I called Borla today and talked to them about the headers. They offered to send out a new set of headers UPS ground for free, to replace my cracked ones. This would not really work for me, since I leave for Oregon Trail in 2 days and dont want to drive on them that far.

He then offered to have a local muffler shop fix the headers for me for free to save time. I accepted this.

We also had a talk about the CEL problem. This is caused by too much cooling of the exhaust gas. He recommended a layer of header wrap to solve the problem. I will be recieving 2 boxes of header wrap from them soon.

Over all a great experience.

Wow! Thats good to hear that Borla does care somewhat for it's customers. So are they still going to send you a replacement header?

Wow... they actually recommended wrap? I thought wrapping them would void the "million mile warranty."

I had my choice.. replacement headers OR fix the ones I have...

I chose to fix mine, since I have an O2 bung and no time to wait. they told me that even the repair on the header would be covered under borla warrenty, so if the repair cracks I can still get a replacement.

as for the wrap, he suggested it would help the CEL and the performance of the header, and in no way would void the warrenty of the header.

Not to be smart or anything but I would get that in writing.

I know Borla is a pretty big company and all and every rep you talk to should give you the same information about what will and won't void your warranty, but unfortuitely others have apparently run into problems or maybe even misconceived altogether that Borla won't have a problem with heat wrap.

I just wish they had honored the warranty of a second hand owner.

well they know the header design is flawed and will crack....header wrap does fix the CE light(ask WRX 555 STi)...they'll be warrantying these for a while i am sure.

I guess the new headers do not have the cross brace material which is where the headers crack at. That is where mine cracked.

the problem is that they did not backflow the welds when they added the cross brace.
