Question p0440 only when tank is 1/2 full or less

this very odd and frustrating. It will pop out this code just about everytime I drive the car ONLY when there is less than 1/2 tank of gas.

The return line looks fine.

Anyone ever heard of this before?

i would start by checking your gas cap, make sure it is on tight.

It has been going on for 3 weeks now, I suppose I could replace the cap. I fill the car up once a week, and this week I have kept it above 1/2 full.

Symptoms

You likely won't notice any drivability problems.
Causes

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

* The gas cap is not installed or working properly
* The purge solenoid has failed
* The canister is plugged and not working properly

Possible Solutions

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code
, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
* Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
* Check and/or replace the sensor
* Check and/or replace the purge valve
* Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

Here is a basic diagram to give you an Idea. It will only show you how the system is set up. it might look a big different.

The EVAP system runs tests under certain criteria only.

I don't know them off the top of my head right now, but some criteria would include:

Fuel temp, Fuel level, driving speed, duration of trip, etc.

This is probably why it only comes on when the tank is at a certain level.

Are you just resetting the code each time with a OBDII reader?

Default Update!

Now that the outdoor temp is up, no more codes. The car has run through 2 tanks of gas error free. I have an OBDII reader and find nothing.

Maybe the fuel temp sensor.

Or you could do what I used to tell my customers when I sold Subarus "the best way to get rid of the problem is to buy a new car"
