Default 2009 WRX - First Mods

Hey guys/gals,

I just picked up a silver 2009 WRX a few weeks ago and already have 1500 miles racked up on it! I'm loving the car and feel I've been pestering my brother a little too much about modding it, so I'd ask you all (Bro has a 2005 STI) Ideally, I'd like to keep this thing as stock looking as possible...so I'll pass on the neon lights and fancy gauges.

My bro insists on me getting a Cobb downpipe for starters. I'm not sure what that is going to do for me but I'll take his word for it. Where the confusion comes into play is the rest of the exhaust. I used to have a 400+ rwhp Mustang and am kind of picky when it comes to exhaust sound. On that car I had a magnaflow system (x-pipe and cat-back), as I was trying to stay away from the redneck flowmaster sound.

Now...I'm trying to stay away from the fart-can sound, but I don't know much of the aftermarket exhausts for the WRX/Sport Compact world. The nice thing about the magnaflows on the stang were that they were quiet at idle, had a nice humble tone when cruising and would really get loud on full throttle (not obnoxiously loud, but a nice glorious tone!) I guess I'm looking for something like that with my WRX. Yes, I have a few of those bratty kids and their stock CRX's with massive exhaust pipe in my neighborhood...very annoying, I don't want to be looked at as one of them (I'm 30yrs old!).

I also see that Borla makes headers for the WRX, anyone have any success with them? Would you consider it a worthwhile investment?

While we settle this exhaust debate, I'm going with an AEM CAI to help it breathe a little better and am trying to find a good programmer. Any other suggestions? I already have a short-throw shifter (that should be mod #1 on any stick IMO)

Regards,

Panda

Any mods you do like TBE and CAI you will need a tune to get max horsepower and prevent leaning out the engine.

Go on youtube and watch the videos, personally I chose the SPT for my 08 on price (they used to sell for $333 as an incentive for us poor 08 drivers it seems). I do like the Perrin exhaust note as well.

The Subie sound will be killed by equal length headers. Then it becomes just another normal exhaust sound.

binaryterror,

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the youtube vids and that perrin system sounds great. A little raspy but for the most part humble. I could probably grab one of those once they start production.

While going to AEM's website to place my order, I see they don't make a CAI for a 2009 WRX. All kinds of sites sell the 2008 CAI as a 2009, but I'm not convinced they are the same car. Guess I just have to play the waiting game until aftermarket people find a need to develop parts for 2009 Sedans (plenty of 2009 Hatch systems out there).

You mentioned a "TBE" in your post. What is that exactly? Throttle Body? Good point about the equal length headers...maybe I can find some unequal length ones.

Regards,

Panda

08-09 are the same cars. The differences would not really effect fitment, however with the bigger turbo in the 09 it might wreck havoc on your fuel values by adding the AEM, hence AEM not claiming it works. It will in fact fit.

Perrin has the 08-09 exhausts done and available. Again 08-09 exhausts are the same fitment to the vehicle.

TBE = turbo back exhaust. This is from the Downpipe to the tail pipe. This is a large increase in power rather cheap, but you will need to have the ECU tuned via either maps or a true dyno tune.

There are no unequal length headers for 08-09. The equal lengths provide good power (once again you'll need a tune) but I can not give up the Boxer rumble.

i have the borla catback on my 08 wrx.i love the sound and it is top quality.its a little expensive though. the downpipe would be awesome on your car but you def. need a tune then.also kiss your warranty goodbye with a downpipe also. also you need a tune for any intake system. read up on unabombers faq section for some answers to your questions. have fun with the car!!

Wow guys thanks for the replies.

Binary, I see I was wrong about Perrin having an exhaust out for the 09 Sedan. I listened to a few videos and the exhaust sounds great! One of the videos I saw apparently had a Cobb downpipe installed as well, so is it safe to assume it mounts to the downpipe?

424, I'm going to check out that borla system. I remember the sound they made for Saleen's was beautiful.

Panda

Got a link for me? I only see the Gen II is you buy an external wastegate set up. I've been to their site and only seen the Perrin and their own, both claim to be equal length.

On my way home I ran a 09 Pontiac G8 from 80 to around 120 several times and he did not pull on me. (He was about 3 car lengths in front of me) I think after realizing how much fun I'm going to have in this car over the summer, I'd just like to go where the proven performance gains are. Would there happen to be a list of the best performance mods for a 2009 WRX? If so, I'd like to take this thing up to Stage II next weekend

Anything you do, be sure to get some good break in miles on it.

I'd recommend going to Stage 2, some real nice numbers with good tunes in the Proven Power Bragging area.

Good to hear you like the Perrin set up! I'll be at Stage 2 Perrin with their CAI and tune for Stage 2 + CAI. Though I am using the SPT exhaust ($300 shipped new was too hard to say no too last summer).

I'm also going with their recirc BOV to be safe.

Dude...$300 on exhaust of any kind you really can't beat! I would have hopped on that opportunity as well!

I was looking at the Perrin intake as well but was a bit concerned about some of their stats. They performed their dyno on a Stage II STI with a stock intake, then on a Stage II STI with their intake. I would imagine there would be so much of a restriction in incoming air they should net more power.

Other companies claim nearly the same hp gains I think I'll look into this more. If a CAI will gain me 10-15 hp on a stock 2009 WRX and another gain 10-15 hp on a Stage II STI then I think there is a better gain on CAI #1. I guess this is the most intimidating thing about getting parts...being afraid their is a better product out there for equal or less money.

This is what I had my eye on. It is a GenII and it is unequal length.

Based on the documented motor failures / issues on the 09' , I'd go slowly on mods, unless you have a very mod friendly dealer.

Yeah I just got my 09 and right now all I'm looking at is doing the exhaust with an SPT. I'll see how I like that and go from there! Dog

I have the Perrin Cat back for my 09 wrx, just installed it about a week ago but want to go with the SPT catback. Anybody want to trade?
I like the look of the perrin but its just a tad too loud for me.

Which exhaust is it and is it for a sedan or 5door. Are you willing to sell it?
