Default HTA68: Can Any 16G Compete?

It has come to my attention that some people may take this thread as a sales pitch or company wide support of the HTA 68. That is not the intended purpose of this review. I wanted to take the time to test a new turbo in the market and provide the community with the most detailed and unbiased report possible. This thread and it's sister thread are here to serve the end user, not the manufacturer. Had this turbo performed poorly or been of poor quality, the review would also have stated that. I(as a rep of Cobb Tuning) only intended to provide useful information to the community that has supported us for so many years. I will always try to give back to this community, as best I can in the form of testing, reviews, or general knowledge. Thank You NASIOC. -John Shafer, Calibrator COBB Tuning

HTA68 TESTING

GENERAL INFO:
This is the smallest of the HTA Turbo line from Forced Performance. It is geared towards the 2.0 OR 2.5L Subaru motors. The retail price is:$849.99

TECHNICAL INFO:
2.4” Inlet, Mitsubishi Housing, 47LB Flow, Stock Location, TGV-OK, Stock Inlet-OK, Internal Watsegate, Billet HTA wheel, 17 – 25 PSI Sweet Spot

http://store.forcedperformance.net/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FP&Product_Cod e=NTSUBFP68HTA&Category_Code=WRX-Turbo

TEST Vehicle: 2008 STI
Turbo Forced Performance HTA 68 (TD05 16G housing size)
Relevant Mods: TBE EX, Walbro 255, Custom FMIC, DW 740cc, Aquamist HFS 5, APS Headers

Out of the Box: My initial impressions were good right out of the box. The housings are not ported and there was no sign of shaft play. The internal flapper sealed appropriately. The wastegate arm had no play or 'wiggle'. Judging by the size, I was expecting a low 300HP turbo.

Install: In the past FP may have been known for fitment issues. I would be the first to agree, on more than one occasion, I wanted to throw a turbo across the shop during an install. In this case, the turbo fit perfectly. The flange to the Up Pipe was no problem. I have an APS inlet, so the silicone is off a bit, but that is due to the APS piece. In all, the install went off with out a hitch. Oil and coolant lines fit like stock, DP/UP had no leaks.

Tuning: I was running a big FP 20G(TD06 8CM) on the car previously, so I had some thoughts on what this turbo was going to do. Robert kept telling me it should out flow the 20G. When you put them side by side, you will say there is no way that can be true. Well, that would be a false assumption.

This turbo turned out to be one of the biggest surprises I have had on a Suby for some time. I can honestly say this turbo absolutely destroys the TD06 in every way. The HTA68 is always in boost. You can have this spooling by 2800RPM, full boost around 3350(if over 22PSI, if under you will hit full boost earlier!) As you can see in the dyno comparisons, this turbo outperforms the 20G in spool and flow. The 20G feels like a big 35R compared to the HTA68.

I will not keep ranting about this, as I want the data to speak for itself. The timing curve is for the HTA68 at 22.5PSI and 11.6AFR.

HTA68 vs STG 2 with APS 70mm
**I will post a screen shot of the HTA timing Curve. AFR looks very different, it is the setting on the AFR scalar(11.0AFR for the STG 2 and the HTA is 11.5/6AFR)

HTA68 vs Big 20G- TD06 8cm
**The HTA is putting less power down, but it is running less timing and boost, the point is what it can do**

HTA68 vs DOM3 Pump

**This is not an entirely fair dyno comparison. The DOM 3 does not really start to make any power until 22 - 23PSI. The idea here is only to show spool and low boost comparison.**

SCREEN SHOTS

Thanks for looking!! I know this is a long one. I have not posted for a while, doing the GTR project and all(98%) of the customer tunes, I have been a bit busy I will try to get some more posts up ASAP.
All of these are tuned with the AP. I can make the timing and fuel maps available to anyone who wants them. You can have the core of this tune for Tuner Race, so it will be a nearly plug and play solution.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

John

John, in the "Out of the box" section you mention that is looked good and ifered that part of the reason it looked good was because it was not ported. Why would you not want it ported?

Hey John, nice to see you around! I was your very first tune when you moved to Cobb in Utah. Really interested in this turbo, I recently upgraded to a DB Super 16G from the vf39 you tuned and am looking at this for the next possible step. Really looking for a good all around turbo that will spool mid 3k and provide a safe 320+ whp to redline, from what I am seeing from these graphs this might be it! Does FP offer it without a IWG?

yeah, me too.

I mean, I think the 2.5L guys are seeing full boost relatively early on td06 20g's, well early enough that it doesnt make driveability suffer..

i am almost positive that the fpgreen spools faster then a vf39 on the sti's...someone please correct me if im wrong!

cobb needs to slap this on a 2 liter bugeye, asap!

^^ A green with full supporting mods and a great tune might spool quicker than a bone stock car, but not a modded car with the vf39...
