Default How do I check if my rings have seated?

Hello all,
I just installed a new shortblock with pistons and rings, and was wondering how to check if the long and boring break in period worked. Want to know if the 1000 miles of slow driving and 3 oil changes paid off.
Thanks

compression and leakdown test. also you'd notice smoking and oil consumption.

Check oil consumption

Compare compression and leakdown tests with the tests you performed at first startup (cough)

Check for gas-contaminated oil

which should come after any internals are broken in (cough) cams (cough)

so check compression after that first 20 minutes or so.

is it normal for built engine to be smoking? what about when you remove the oil filler cap, is it normal for built engine to have some smoke?

my built engine don't have those smoke at the tailpipe nor from the oil filler cap. I hope my PW clearance is not that thight that would lead to premature failure but so far my engine runs very smooth

Break in periods are highly debatable (not going there though). Imo, if you've driven 1,000 miles, your rings are broken in. Oil consumption is not a good indicator of engine health. Turbos eat oil, valve seals can leak, lots of stuff that has nothing to do with base engine condition. Smoke can be normal on startup depending on what material your pistons are made of and what your piston/wall clearance is. 2618 material requires more p/w clearance than 4320 due to thermal expansion, this can cause normal cold start smoke. Should go away when the motor warms up.
