Default 02 WRX starts then dies after a backfire

02 WRX with headers, catless uppipe/turboback, Grimmspeed EBCS, AccessPort and Clark Turner e-tune. Had a very loud backfire after shifting into fourth, the car then began stuttering and soon died. Car starts but will not idle, I was able to keep it running while at a stand still but under hard throttle it would stutter, fight back, and the RPMs would not rise. I could tell by the smell of my exhaust that it was running extremely rich. My AFRs were reading rather spurratically, jumping between 15 and 11 while holding the throttle steady - so I assumed bad o2 sensor(s). Yet no CEL? Is this because the AccessPort blocks these codes, similar to blocking the misfire code? Any thoughts?

Wow. Um, well... did you happen to see what your EGT's were? What RPM did you have the "Backfire" at? Any metallic crunchy noises? Does it feel like your car is doing the "back and forth herky jerky" as soon as you get on it? Define "will not idle"
I'm sorry to say this, but I feel that a bad O2 sensor might be the cheapest answer to this, but not the most likely.

well theres your problem. He's blown up more than a few engines.

also, are you talking about literally a backfire? as in out the intake? or an afterfire, out the exhaust? Legit backfires are uber rare and most certainly mean immenent doom.

That's what I was thinking. "Backfire" on an '02 with those mods is normally just unburned gas in the exhaust, but if you have a legitimate backfire, a real "kaboom" backfire, there's a bigger problem.

No clue on the EGTs or afterfire vs. backfire. Pardon my mistake, as far as I knew, both ignitions in the intake or the exhaust were categorized as backfire.

Yes it was while driving the few feet I was willing to torture the car for.

Any metallic crunchy noises?
No, and even while running the car afterwards no one was able to hear anything abnormal aside from the stuttering and hesitation.

Define "will not idle"
When I say won't idle, I mean it will die unless I give it a little gas.

ten bucks you blew an intercooler coupling. Did that on mine and ran extremly rich and was actually spurting fire it was that bad. Fixed te coupling replaced plugs and ran fine.

but the correct term is afterfire when it comes out of the exhaust.

+1

sounds like vaccume leak for starters, also check your o2 sensor... last time my car made a bang... it blew a part of the o2 apart... replaced it and fixed a few inlet vaccume leaks and i was good to go.
