Default Odd swap: 2.5RS engine EJ251 into my93 L wagon EJ18 / EJ20k

So I have this wagon I affectionately call "cancer". It had an EJ20K STI swap. I bought the engine from a JDM importer and it came with a spun bearing. They didn't offer any solutions so it'll have to be replaced. I want to put an MY01 2.5RS engine in it with full exhaust, Delta cams, Ganz style intake and the MY01 ecu with the Crawford Performance reflash. I have an extra MY01 wiring harness from my other car. How difficult would it be to just use that harness and replace the L/version 3 STI harness? Then just buy a lightly used EJ25 engine. Voilą!

I don't want another EJ20K engine. I want a stockish NA Subaru motor with easy to find parts, good gas mileage and wicked reliability. If you want a turbo L buy my old engine and get down. I'm too old and grumpy to deal with JDM parts anymore.

cheers

poorman

Well I don't know the situation with the wiring. It may or may not need a clean up. Which is why I kind of want to go back to stock and swap the EJ25 in.

Plus!... I buy the engine/trans you listed. 1300 dollars more invested in just that. Then I may or may not have to work with the wiring. Does this engine just plug right into an EJ20K swap, ECU and all? Then it'll need tuning because I'm in Cali. So I'll need a PFC. I'm over 2 grand already... for my daily.

cheers

Swapping harnesses isn't difficult but it is time consuming. Do you have all the harnesses from front to back?

Option 1:
You can replace EVERYTHING with your 01 harness and be 99% plug and play...plus able to get a crawford reflash, etc. (bulkhead harness, engine harness, fender harness, tail harness.) If you're missing any of the harnesses...you can still make it work but you will be doing more splicing. Keep in mind if you are going this route and are avoiding wire splicing you will need to use the newer style dash...or at least new-style cluster to plug into. This is also nice because when you're done you can plug in a OBD II scanner and read codes if you have issues. Donor car is best for this route.

Option 2:
Your other route is much easier and cheaper but slightly less fun. You can run the 2.5 with the 1.8 ecu. The car take a few more rpms to get going on the low end but it will run fine. You also will not be able to get a reflash with the older 1.8 ecu.

Either route above should hit your goals: "easy to find parts, good gas mileage and wicked reliability"

Option 3:
Do a bunch of splicing and merge the 93 harness with 01 harness. Still not rocket science...but may be less reliable or harder to trouble shoot if you are not skilled at wiring. This may put you in the same mess you are in now where you aren't sure of your wiring situation.
