Default Rumormill: Porsche reconsidering Panamera-based 928 successor?

Quote:
Despite previous reports to the contrary, new reports suggest that Porsche is indeed planning a front-engine coupe to fill the void left in its line-up by the old 928. The original front-engined V8 GT was built by Porsche in various iterations between 1978 and 1995 before it was dropped. Since news of the four-door Panamera's development began circulating, so did rumors of a two-door variant to pick up the 928's mantle, but now that the Panamera has made its official public debut in Shanghai, new accounts suggest that Stuttgart is working on it already.

In this case, according to UK magazine Auto Express, any potential 928 successor would run in parallel, not as a replacement to the 911 (natch). Expect a fastback profile and the mechanicals to carry over largely from the Panamera, while reportedly reduced demand for lower-end Porsches like the Boxster and Caymen would dictate that the new GT would be positioned significantly higher, taking aim at the likes of the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9. Is there any truth to the reports? Only time will tell, but in the meantime we've assembled a new gallery with high-resolution images of the original Porsche 928 for your nostalgic reminiscence...just click the thumbnails below

Makes sense. Interesting how they want to position it above the 911/V8 Vantage.

I agree that it makes sense. This will basically be a 2-door Panamera. I also understand that they want to move up market (so is everyone else), but I think a large GT will steal sales away from the 911.

If Porsche really wants to gain market share, I think a smaller sedan that would compete with the likes of a BMW 3 series or Audi A4 would have been a better choice. Since Porsche now owns VW/Audi, they can take the already very good A4 and add the Porsche touch to it along with all the engine that will be available in the Panamera. Don't know if a flat 6 will fit between struts of an A4.

A High end coupe may be hard to introduce in these times

Makes way more sence than the actual panamera in my book. They already have a people hauler and the high brow croud dig luxury performance gts. Of course that market is crouded already. Not nearly as many cars to cross shop against the panamera.

I think they should take exactly the same bodywork from the 928 and modernize with the latest running gear. Tht car was and still is beautiful....doesnt look a bit dated to me

Agreed, but do something about the rear wheel arches. You can't stick any big meats back there because of them.

The original 928 was intended to replace the 911. So doesn't surprise me they would plan for a 928 reboot to be over the 911.
