Default RCE Regular Guy springs for '08-09 STI and WRX 265

Racecomp Engineering "Regular Guy" Functional Lowering Springs for GR
Chassis 2008+ Subaru Impreza STI

Finally, a performance spring designed with function over form is available for the latest Subaru Impreza STI. Incorporating the knowledge gained from designing a growing list of suspension and brake performance parts for the true track day and autocross enthusiast, Racecomp Engineering is proud to announce the latest addition to their line up. The Regular Guy Functional Lowering Springs for the 2008+ Subaru Impreza
STI are designed as the ultimate performance spring upgrade for the newly redesigned GR chassis.

Paying special attention to the completely new rear suspension design of the GR chassis, the Functional Lowering Springs provide a mild 5mm drop front and rear to maximize the extremely limited suspension travel available. Shorter bumpstops are included front and rear to take things one step further, resulting in more bump travel than stock. Rarely does an aftermarket spring set-up add suspension travel, but in this case it is a crucial design aspect that improves performance while helping to maintain a civil ride on the street.

Spring rates of 320 lbs/in front and rear are intended to work with the completely new rear suspension of the GR chassis, which has a lower motion ratio in the rear than previous Imprezas. In addition, the OEM dampers have been carefully examined on a shock dyno to match the new spring rates to the dampers.

Racecomp Engineering’s goal was to help cure the crippling understeer that adds to lap times at the track and autocross course. Studying the design of the new GR suspension, a new performance spring has been produced that adds to available bump travel, matches the excellent OEM dampers, and works in conjunction with the new rear motion ratio. The result is a car that handles extremely well from corner entry to corner exit.

Continuing the “Regular Guy” theme from previous Racecomp designs, the springs are colored black for a low key look. Coupled with the minimal drop, most people would be hard pressed to find anything different from stock….until the road curves.

Specfications:
5mm drop front and rear
320 lb/in front and rear
Shortened bump stops included front and rear (12mm shorter front, 18mm shorter rear)

excellent intro pricing

guys jump on this. Myles did his homework on this one. you cannot compare this one to the GD chassis, as the GR stock shocks have much better valving.

i can report back if desired on my own review. Tonight they go in!

Previous Suspension mods:
Cobb front and rear bars (25mm hollow, 23.1mm solid)
Cusco Front upper strut bar
Cusco Front Lower Brace
Whiteline Rear sub-frame inserts
Whiteline Steering Rack Bushings

Items installed:
RCE functional springs (-5mm drop)
Whiteline Antilift Kit
SPC front camber bolts

Impression:

I can see that I have -1.6 degrees of front camber, as the tire nicely tilts inward. The front tire is now closer to the front fender, as the caster has been increased by 0.5 degrees.

Expansion cracks and pot holes:

Stock – body took them not too bad, but the deep pot holes on corners made the car float and cause some loss of traction. The cracks would shock all of the way up the spine, and make things feel pretty harsh. This made me drive on the white outside line to reduce the impacts (as most traffic stays in the 18 wheeler ruts and take the pothole/crack expansion abuse)

RCE – totally transformed. Expansion cracks and potholes are no problem now, with very little is transferred to the driver thanks to shorter bump stops and springs that match the strut/shock. It is very comfortable to drive around on rough roads, as things are smoother and the suspension sucks up the bumps. It is firmer on the frost heaves, and tends to follow the heave more closely, rather than float over it or get any sudden harshness (stock). When accelerating, changing lanes, the car remains flat with little body roll.

Autocross: soon, 1 week away.

Overall, its well worth the money and every STI car should have them. RCE got this product bang on. Comfort and performance are not compromised. What more can a guy ask.

GF Review: "I don't feel the bumps as much, but i can hear them (rattling interior)". She really likes this mod, as she didnt like the stock spring harsh ride, becouse the expansion cracks/potholes engauged the stock bump stops frequently. The new RCE gives tons more travel, and since the valving is matched to the spring rate, the bumps are absorbed by the suspension and not the driver/passangers.

Rear

Front

apparently there is a -5mm reduction in ride height. Hard to see.

By the way...

Spring rates are increased by 50% in the front and 65% in the rear. The Stock suspension relys on the stock long bump stops to increase the spring rate in the corners, where as the RCE changes the design by adding the spring rate to the springs, and only use the RCE bump stops for preventing suspension damage.

Also i live 10hrs north of you mainlanders... so trust me, these will no problem for your near perfect roads (i love spending time down there for that one reason). Most roads up north here are 30yrs old, due for replacement, and we have a pothole/expansion crack every 20-50ft.

Autocross:
Wow... much improved. The car turns when i want it, and i can feel the suspension working. no more random bump stop oversteer.

reduced body roll. increased grip, reduced understeer. all i have left is dialing in the tire pressures [40f, 38r].

Remember im still on the STOCK dunlop tires.

1st place. i edged out by over 2 seconds:

2006 Vett Z06, every bushing is a spherical bearing, solid steel drivetrain mounts, stupid camber and caster. 650/500 coils, and R-comps. [2nd place]
Two stock Lotus Elises'
A few Z06's with minor suspension mods.
2008 M3 with exhaust, chip, springs and r-comps.
2005 John Cooper works Mini with RE-01R, with minor suspension mods [3rd place]

and... i only have 1 season under my belt, so im by far not the best driver yet. I also had a passanger for the entire event, where as the rest did not.

All i can say is... RCE really got this one right on spot.
