Default version 4 heads...wat cams can I use?

I have a set of version 4 STI heads that have just the springs. I am getting valves, but wondering what options I have for cams. Ive been researching and it sounds like the phase I heads cant use phase II cams....due to bearing differences right by the front seal. Ive been searching and I guess ive been looking in the wrong places since it thought the STI was a 2.5 for version 4 but all Ive been finding is Ej20t.. can someone please set me straight...I have never messed with turbo apps before and am stumped. Maybe Matt Monson or Jay Storm can comment if they stumble across this thread.

I'm pretty sure that you can put in Ej25D cams but given that they are NA they probably wouldn't be all that great for what you are doing.

If I had those heads what I would do is go on Ebay and look for some HKS or Kelford cams for the Ej20k. Or find a vendor with an account with one of those companies and order the cams in from overseas. You could also try going directly to MRT. They will ship to the states and carry a lot of that kind of stuff.

right now cams for the 20K when gotten from japan are expensive due to the currency conversion, looked into getting some JUN parts for mine, very expensive....

Custom cams are never cheap. Kelfords are $900 USD even though current exchange rates are $.55 NZD to $1 USD.

Intake duration 236 deg
Intake lift 8.0 mm
Exhaust opens 54/30 deg BBDC (two different lobes)
Exhaust closes 10/10 deg ATDC
Exhaust duration 244/220 deg
Exhaust lift 8.2/7.1 mm

Yeah,
Both Delta and Web could do that for him if he came up with some cores. A bit cheaper than new billets.

Marnix,
While not that different on paper I've seen a number of builds done here in the states with those cams. The problem is that they fall flat around 5500 rpm. They weren't designed to rev high, so they just don't make any decent power at or above 6000 rpms.

marnix is there a difference between the standard wrx vs v.3/4 cam or is it just in the valve setup?

For MY97/98 turbo EJ20# there where 3 types of cams available in Japan:

EJ20G (WRX Wagon, Forester) and EJ20H (Legacy TwinTurbo AT) part numbers ending with AA230.
EJ20K (non-STI WRX Sedan) and EJ20R (Legacy TwinTurbo MT) part numbers ending with AA240.
EJ20K (WRX STI Sedan Version III/IV) part numbers ending with AA390.

There is some grey area with the AA240 being used also on MY97 STI's but I'm not sure. Valve train (springs, buckets) differs also.

Ok thanks guys. Im looking into jdm cams, but could I use usdm 25 cams? If so that would get me started. My car got into a front end collision, and I yanked my 22e sole it, and have a 22t shortblock, thats been rebuilt last month. I need these heads to get up and moving for me. Can anyone give me solid assurance that stock 25d cams will work. Im not looking to make power past 5500 for now, due to the fact that Ill still have my auto till October. So I have some time to get hte right cams, but need something to get me moving in the mean time. Thanks for the input guys, please keep it coming.

where are you getting your valves from? i have a set of v4 sti heads that are being rebuilt and im told i need 4 intake and 4 exhaust valves. i got a price from a dealer in japan of $550 for the valves, not including tax or shipping.
im probably going to have custom valves made unless i can find the oem ones for substantially cheaper. my engine came from a gc8e4ed model which apparently has the engine with the most expensive replacement parts ever made...

The intake valves are the same as the EJ25D according to Marnix and that is what I am using in mine currently. The exhaust are supposed to be sodium filled at least in some versions, perhaps RA only. Again same size at EJ25D valves. I don't know where to get them cheaply.
