Default Pontiac to be killed this coming Monday?

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=146706

DETROIT According to a source at General Motors, the company will announce next Monday its new "faster, deeper" reorganization plan, which will likely include a death sentence for the Pontiac brand.

Inside Line called Tom Wilkinson, news relations PR man for General Motors, who said: "There's nothing I can share with you at this time. Keep your eyes on our media site. Officially, nothing has changed with Pontiac's niche-brand status, until you hear differently."

The one-time "Excitement" division and creator of legends such as the GTO and Firebird was relegated to "niche" or "specialty" brand status by General Motors in its first viability plan in December of last year.
The company toyed with competing proposals to either turn the brand into GM's version of Scion or to make Pontiac a very focused purveyor of performance cars based around the critically well-received G8. But ultimately, Pontiac was chosen as the easiest to kill since it was cut from GM's self-defined herd of four "core brands," Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC and Buick. Most Pontiac franchises have already been combined with Buick and GMC.

If true, Pontiac will join Saab, Saturn and Hummer as brands that will not survive GM's current troubles at least not as a component of General Motors.

Inside Line says: Just as the G8 reawakened our interest in 83-year-old Pontiac, the brand falls victim to bad times and old mistakes. Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit

The good thing is that GM USA has a contract with Holden to supply the Commodore through 2012, which means that the G8 will probably still be available though with another name.

Well, since Holden is a subsidiary of GM, I'm sure they could easily come to an agreement to terminate that contract early.

Not necessarily. GM USA still owes Opel money for some of their patents, and Opel is a fully owned division of GM. Plus, the Pontiac G8 is a good car and I would hate to see it go away.

If GM files Chapter 11 the contracts don't mean ****. I do think it would be good to continue the car as the Chevy Impala.

Good news IMO; the Pontiac styling tacked onto that car looks awful.

I know its teh joor interwackynets and it really doesn't amount to much but I am looking for a replacement for the WRX and the G8 is one of the few I drove and actually made it on the final list. It is a hell of a car. But this news takes it right off the list...why am I gonna buy a car if the company is not going to support it anymore.

GM needs to pull ther head out of their ass quick....er.

Oh no my resale value! Haha Oh well, I'll be keeping my G8 for at least 5 years.

Maybe GM will bring this over as a Buick...

Honestly makes sense, aside from the G8 everything Pontiac has is either a re-branded or re-labeled existing product.
Slap a "GM" sticker on the G8 and ax everything else, not sure about the USA however in Canada all dealerships are combined anyways so in the end it makes the most sense...heck I said 3 years ago Pontiac was a waste of time and made no sense.

I like the G8, but I won't be sad to see Pontiac go. These are tough times, and its just not pulling its own weight.

It's at the top of CNN right now.

Too bad, but the Solstice and G8 are their only good cars. Hopefully they get rebranded as Chevys.

So long G8, we hardly knew ye.

Perhaps I should convince my dad to sell one of his Corvettes and buy a G8 before they totally go under.

No he's not. The G8 is typical garish Pontiac styling with those fake hood air intakes. The Commodore is a much better looking car.
