Default Cadillac Converj Concept: A Volt For Cadillac

Cadillac Converj Concept: A Volt For Cadillac

The Voltec-equipped, extended range electric Cadillac Converj Concept has been unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show to a round of crushing applause by a mad-house crowd of GM employees.

Cadillac Converj Concept Details

Cadillac Converge - First Shots

Cadillac Converj Concept

The Cadillac Converj Concept takes advantage of GM's freshly renamed "Voltec" power system, previously referred to as E-Flex. The new Converj combines Volt power with Cadillac style, utilizing every design element we come to expect from Caddy. It gets a much more forward design than last years Cadillac CTS coupe but balances things out with a fastback style. Inside are cool blue accents over a white leather everything. Complete details below.

------------------------------

Another home-run for Cadillac in the styling department. I just hope that the production car looks this fantastic, and that it's specs are at least as impressive as the Volt's.

That thing is the best looking car that I have seen come from GM since the C2 big block cars.

I think it is a mix of the Cien and the Sixteen looks... which of course not surprising since they all have the same design-language.

I think this is the best application of the Caddy design language yet. However, I'm not sure how well this will translate into the production version, because they're still using all the typical concept car tricks.

Swap the 21's for low rolling resistance 16's, do away with the big fender flares and the dramatic lights, raise the roof and the whole car, add door handles and mirrors...

SRX Concept:

SRX Production (2010):

I think the production car actually looks better than the concept, so lets all hope that this is the same deal with this car.
(well, except for the rims, for some reason as Cadillac is turning out nicer looking cars, their rim designs are getting worse)

I don't think that is a legitimate comparison. The SRX looked production ready at the concept. The Converj (is it really that difficult to put 'ge' instead of 'j') will not look like this in production form. This doesn't look anywhere near production ready due to the things mentioned by bal00. I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong. But I won't be.

I agree. Remember how good the Volt looked, and what it looks like now in development? Windtunnel issues my butt, that cannot be completely blamed for the 180 that car did in the styling department.

If that Cadillac looks like that, sign me up. In related news, I know GM didnt debut the CTS Coupe at LA as planned, is the car completely dead now? I cannot get a straight answer, even from friends at GM related companies.

What about the the Enclave concept? (even though, that one is similar to the SRX above, in which it was almost ready to be released when the slightly disguised concept was shown)

Or even better, the Camaro concept then?

When it was first shown off, it was definitely not anywhere near production ready nor based on any production components... it was strictly a concept.

This Converj really doesn't look that far away from production. Swap out the typical stuff like smaller rims, bigger ground clearance, taller greenhouse, bigger mirrors and tweak it's proportions a little to make it more drivable and it really does look semi-production ready.

We'll see.

C A M A R O Production is very true to concept theme.

Kinda puts a dent in your theory!!

The point is non of you know how much criteria has been baked into this concept, so lets just say YOU don't know.

The CTS Coupe is dead as of now. But it wouldn't take much to put it into production. It's just the more models you have, the more $$ it costs.

So basically, this is a concept CTS coupe, with the Volt style drivetrain which will be placed in alot of different cars just like Toyota's hybrid drivetrain.

Well, having the Camaro concept look like a low slung performance car is not much of a problem, because that's what it's supposed to be.

However, when you're trying to get the best possible range out of a daily-driver electric car, you can't use 265/35-21's or fender flares that stick out 3 inches. I mean there's a reason the Volt went from this:

to this:

I like that Caddy but the new Volt reminds of of the older Chrysler Cirrus.

Default General Motors reportedly approves Cadillac Converj for production

Quote:
At the Detroit Auto Show in January, General Motors surprised the crowd with a concept coupe called the Cadillac Converj. Built on the same Voltec platform as the Chevrolet Volt, the Converj was seen as a way for GM to leverage the pricey ER-EV drivetrain in a vehicle that could sell at a premium price, recovering some of the development costs. According to Motor Trend, the Converj has been given the green light for production in 2011, a year after the Volt launches. When we talked to GM's Bob Kruse at the Detroit show, he indicated a production Converj would likely use the same powertrain as the Volt, although it could have different calibrations to allow somewhat higher performance than the Chevrolet.

If the Converj does move forward, the proportions might have to change in order to use the same under-structure as the Volt. However, the larger stumbling block to building the Converj is money or a lack thereof. Unless some kind of deal is struck between the Treasury and Energy Departments to allows GM to tap into ATVM loans, there won't be enough cash in GM's coffers to build the Converj

Cadillac is one of the saving graces for GM, and I think could function on their own if allowed

I saw the production Volt at the DC auto show and that was when I decided that I was going to purchase one. It looks very good in person. It has a sturdy appearance. If the Converj can make it into production for under 65 grand, I'm in and will not purchase the Volt. I'm waiting for the convertible Camaro to hit the show room floors. GM is putting out a great range of products right now. If we didn't have 2 kids, we would have a Convertible Corvette. I had an opportunity to drive the CTS-V and that thing is insane, but with the choices that are coming down the line, I'd rather have a drop top with 4 seats and 400+horsepower as the weekend toy. My daily driver will continue to be a high mileage vehicle with 4 seats. I trust GM will survive in one form or another and change its developement and manufacturing structure to be world class.

i was thinking that even if this did not show up on the volt platform, it might make a good BMW 1 series fighter
