Unhappy J&S problems

I got my Ultra Safeguard this past week and decided to install it today. I got all the wires hooked up by following Jewbaru's instructions on scoobymods.com. Once i fired up the car, the motor was shaking really hard and the idle was extremely rough. When i would push on the gas a little sometimes i would hear a pop and it would be extrememly slow to rev.

I disconnected the Ignition wires from the J&S and put them back to stock and the car works fine, just like before i started the install.

I am thinking that it is constantly retarding it and im not sure why. I had the sensitivity set all the way to the left (min), i had the first 4 pins up, just like in the instructions, and the 5th down. Now the light above the monitor jack would flash, and the light on the far right would turn on as soon as i would push the gas. I have no idea what could cause this. Any ideas?

Jason

Are the switches on the new units set differently then the old ones? Have you tried the instructions provided with the unit to make sure?

Isn't timing already programmed into the unit when you buy it, alon with the knock sensor?

Maybe you are retarding way too much, but at idle?

Definetly double check and make sure the switches on this unit are the same as the old one.

Instructions that come with the J & S or the regular safeguard instructions that are on ScoobyMods?

As soon as I get mine I will have instructions up for the Ultra safeguard.

Aaron

The ones that come with the Safeguard. it doesn't look like they were made for the Ultra, but rather the other one. O well.

ituner, good find, as you can see i am having issues as well, and mine is a version 1. the version 1 should work if its a 2 channel, i told John i had a version 1 and he never said it wouldnt work.

the only thing i am wondering about is that i have read that the switches need to be up for 3,4 for version 1's but down on later versions, but up above john says they need to be down.

John told me up on the phone but maybe he was confused.

i'll call him this afternoon.

The version 1 should work just fine if it's a two channel unit but as I recall it doesn't have boost retard capability - just knock. I can't remember what the switches should be on that one (I've had a few of them) but I know you can send John an email and he's really good at getting back to people.

Well... is it an Ultra Safeguard, or a version 1 Safeguard?

Really, if you call J&S, John will answer any question you have without even a hesitation. He's probably one of the coolest guys I've talked to in the aftermarket domain, and smart as hell, to boot.
