Default Chevrolet Corvette gets launch control for 2010 update

Quote:
Chevrolet is planning a series of updates for the Corvette for the 2010 model year, with changes affecting the entire lineup, from the base model all the way up to the scorching ZR1 supercar. First and foremost is the introduction of the Grand Sport Model, which returns for 2010 with widebody styling and race-bred suspension.

The other major introduction is a new Launch Control system as standard for all manual ‘Vettes. Speaking with CorvetteBlogger, GM engineer Tadge Juechter explained that the new system modulates engine torque 100 times per second and is designed to give drivers optimal traction during full throttle starts.

All the driver has to do is switch the traction control to competitive mode and then floor the gas pedal. This will set the engine’s RPM at a predetermined level depending on what powerplant is residing under the hood, be it a LS3, LS7 or supercharged LS9. When the clutch is released the Launch Control system modulates the engine torque depending on grip levels and traction. Importantly, using Launch Control won’t void the Corvette’s warranty like in some other high-performance cars.

Additionally, the ZR1 is fitted with a Performance Traction Management (PTM) feature that integrates the individual Traction Control, Active Handling, and Selective Ride Control systems.

As for the rest of the updates, Chevrolet is reintroducing its Torch Red paint scheme for the Z06 and ZR1, adding side airbags as standard on all models, and offering new interior colors and embroidery options

Hey, what's a warranty without a company to honor it?

No worries, if you drive that, your hairline will recede from the speed pushing it back...

The GT-R is pretty good looking in person, IMHO, but I agree it's nowhere near as cool-looking as the Corvette. Especially not the Z06/ZR-1 or this Grand Sport.

Edit: On pricing, don't think there's anything official, but the rumor I heard was ~$4K (For the Grand Sport). Kinda rough, if it's actually replacing the $1700 Z51 package, though I'd argue certainly still worth it.

^ But at the end of the day, GT-Rs will turn more heads than the Vette, whether it's because onlookers like it or not.

I would hope that you'd take a ZR1 over a GT-R... when money isn't a factor.

Riiiight... because that happens SOOOO often. I live in Newport Beach, where damn near everyone here on the weekends busts out with a Ferrari or Lamborghini. Yes, they turn heads, but GT-Rs get a lot of attention, even in this superficial OC world where most people are accustomed to BMW M cars and Porsche 911s as everyday cars. Corvettes never really get a second glance here, while I actually saw two GT-Rs in my area this past weekend (driven by older white guys, not rich young Asian kids), and heads turned like crazy, no matter who it was.

I'm not attacking anyone's opinion, I'm just going off of my observations of the public perception of the vehicle.

Only because of rarity/cost though, not looks. The base Corvette is much more common so indeed people are used to seeing them.

Despite that, I wouldn't trade the base model for anything in the world. Personally, money being no object, I'd still probably prefer a Z51/Grand Sport to a Z06/ZR1. That's just me though, I prefer the performance value of the regular Vette and also concede (unlike probably anyone on this forum) that 436hp is a lot more in line with my skills as a driver than 500 or 640hp. Plus if I were to ever change my mind on that, 500-650hp would easily be attainable.

All sounds very good, but I think the interior needs more serious overhaul than just new color schems. The Cobalt steering wheel needs to go.

And also, it'd be nice if they dialed up the steering feel a little, according to reviews dynamically that seems to be about the only complaint.

^ I remember reading that for the '08 C6, GM had upgraded the steering to include a few things from the Z06 to enhance its steering feel.

At over 100k for either after markup, money shouldn't be a factor.

Yeah, but GT-Rs marked up to over $100k aren't really that common any more, so that argument is invalid. If that were the case, then yes, a ZR1 would be the better choice... but that's not really happening much anymore. While a GT-R at YOUR local Nissan dealership (not any near me) might be marked up, rest assured that you can walk out with one for much less than that.

The stripes on the fender are ugly, but the rest of the car especially the wheels looks great!

Concerning the cars, I say that comparing cars at this performance level is rather pointless if you ask me - they are all well above the price point that mere mortals can purchase, and a good driver in the slowest car would probably beat a bad driver in the fastest car. It's all a pissing-contest that gets rather boring.

I've always had a soft spot for that car. I can remember seeing them at car shows with my dad when I was really you. I thought they were about the coolest thing there was at the time.
