v4 sti ej20k valves question

i have a set of v4 sti heads that are being rebuilt and i was told i need 4 intake and 4 exhaust valves. i got a price from a dealer in japan of $550 for the valves, not including tax or shipping. i cant afford to drop $1100 on new valves, so i need an alternative.
my engine came from a gc8e4ed model, engine code is ej20kdw7pr.

i have been told that ej25d valves will work and ive been told that they wont, something about shim over bucket vs shim under bucket.
i have a complete ej25 dohc heads out of a 98 rs that i can pull valves from, or i can have new custom valves made for $$$.

can somebody clear this matter up so i can get on with putting my engine back together and finally get my swap done?

Why not remove valves from the EJ25D and compare them? If the length is OK they will fit. However, the EJ20K valves are hollow (intakes) and sodium filled (exhaust).

Have you tried japanparts.com?

i just looked on japanparts.com, the intakes are $447 for a full set and the exhaust are $483 and thats without shipping.

i think im going to try the ej25 valves. is the length all thats going to matter though or is the shim bucket (over vs under) being a different type going to matter?

You can get new exhaust valves (13202AA330) here in Europe at the dealer, they're expensive at 75 Euros excl. VAT each. No idea why intakes can't be ordered.

Yes, this is going to matter. Another member recently encountered this same problem. He had shim under bucket heads and his builder ordered Ej25D valves and they were too short.

As I said I am using the EJ25D intake valves in STi V3 Type R heads. I am boosting 21psi no problems. They have only been in there for about 5k kms so far though. I would think that the exhaust valves would get a lot hotter, so you are likely best to go with the pricey ones.

Mind you, the EJ25D valves are identical to the valves which are used in the EJ20G up to 240 hp. Those engines have been tuned to around 300 hp (crank) without any issues.

We ordered supertech valves.

There is no USDM available part from Subaru or Ferrea that replaces the EJ20K STI shim under bucket valve.

one big difference is in the price but im not sure whether they are going to be any better or worse. the supertech valves should be around $320, while the oem valves were about $950 before shipping/taxes from japanparts.com.

james, did they finally give you a total on the whole rebuild?

You could convert to a shimless design but it ends up being just as expensive (??) and more downtime.

Supertech make a quality SS valve and manufacturing time is next to nothing when compared to having to do a valve job from scratch.

they are special order, i believe they are standard sti valves that are machined down to fit the 20k. pm kingsubi, he was the one that deal with supertech and ordered the parts for me.

I wanted to share that I bought the following Superetch Valves that work with the V3 - V4 JDM STi heads:

Exhaust: SEVI - 1016 (Inconel) price $33 eachIntake: SIVN - 1016 (Nitrided) price $ 22 eachThey are made for the 97 - 98? Subaru EJ25 2.5Lts, I was able to get the part number from ZEN Performance in the UK, they used to sell them as V3 - V4 Supertech valves. If you ask Supertech directly for V3 - V4 JDM STi valves they might tell you that they don´t have them, sothe part numbers are realy helpful.

Get measurements on the valves, stem diameter, head diameter and length, then refer to Supertech's catalog.

Hey guys,

Im just wondering, whats all involved in the shimless conversion? If at all possible Id like to do it. I have some 20k STI heads that I have springs and keepers and cams for, but no valves. Since I have everything apart I would like to go shim less since no matter what Im going to spend the cash anyway. Can anyone point me in a good direction? I know that the bucket dimensions and thickness need to be used, but since I have neither, does it really matter? If it does, can anyone post them?

Use Supertech valves for a EJ25 engine, length should be around 105 mm (checked them last week). You can go shimless using the buckets of a EZ30R H6 engine. Measure valve clearances so you know what buckets to order.
