Default GM talking to Toyota on another shared model to replace Pontiac Vibe

Quote:
GM CEO Fritz Henderson made it pretty clear that no Pontiac will be rebadged as a Chevrolet after announcing that the automaker will phase out Pontiac at the end of 2010. However, Henderson said that the Pontiac Vibe could be built well into 2010 and that GM is in negotiation with its New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. partner (NUMMI) - Toyota.

According to Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson, GM is in talks with Toyota to produce a new model for one of the surviving brands including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.

Without the Pontiac Vibe, GM is left without a need for NUMMI.

"We’re negotiating to see how best to utilize that facility going forward," Hopson told Automotive News . "We’re clearly not backing away from our partnership at NUMMI. There’s no issue of us backing away from NUMMI."

Wouldn't be surprised if they just slap Chevy badges on the current Vibe...

I like the Vibe. I had one once a rental and it is definitely a good little family car. It's not to big or to small.

Chevy should just drop it and bring the new Astra or the Corsa.

Hey, uh, Toyota. GM here. Why don't you give us that one car you have, you know, that funny shaped one that gets good gas mileage? No, not the Yaris. That other one. Yeah, the Prius, I think that's it. Oh, it's a hybrid? Really? We just liked the way it looked. Honestly! So what do you say?

They keep on saying that they aren't going to "rebadge" any existing Pontiac models, but that doesn't mean they won't restyle an existing car with new sheetmetal.

I could definitely see a Vibe/Matrix-based small car being sold as the low-end of the GMC lineup. different sheetmetal, but same car on the inside.

If GM is smart, they'll kill the Colorado and get a variant of the Tacoma since it's made at NUMMI.

My mother in law has a Matrix (last gen) and my brothers girlfriend has a Vibe (last gen). Both seem like solid little runabouts.

Yes, then they get to layoff/buyout more American employees that build a proven, reliable product that sells for an imported vehicle that has already proven to be a huge flop.

Not built in the US yet. It will be built in Mississippi at some point, but that plant has no connection to GM. (I know you probably knew this.)

This is actually do-able. Does Toyota have anything to gain by this, though?

Pickup sales aren't doing too great and maybe Toyota can unload a few more Tacomas through Chevy dealers. Also, GM could proffer some medium-duty trucks in exchange (imagine a Silverado 2500 based truck with Toyota i-Force engine)

A bold move that could pay off handsomely if done right is having GM and Toyota co-develop a line of trucks and large vans for the North American market. Toyota is strong with small trucks like the Tacoma and GM is strong with big trucks like the Silverado. This would give GM a competent small truck and give Toyota a presence in the medium-duty truck market.

I hear ya, but I think I would take a Tundra over a silverado. Although I think the Silverado looks better. I think the Tundra is better equipped. I do not think Toyota would be willing to use Silverados to compete with its Tundra in house.

I don't get it; it's one of the best vehicles GM sells (because its really a Toyota)

Probably a good time for somebody to pick one up for short cash.

Actually, GM can keep the Cruze and the Vibe; and Toyota can keep the Matrix ... I'd rather have the Corolla or Auris Hatchback (because it looks a bit better).

And can someone teach the NY Times that the Vibe is a hatchback not a "compact wagon".

Default GM has no replacement for Vibe at Toyota joint venture http://www.autonews.com/artic

Quote:
DETROIT (Reuters) -- General Motors has not found a vehicle it could produce at a joint-venture factory it operates with Toyota Motor Corp. in California, a senior GM executive said today.

Troy Clarke, GM's president of North American operations, said that the U.S. automaker remained in talks with Toyota but had been unable to find a vehicle to replace the Pontiac Vibe, which will go out of production by the end of August.
The comments added to the uncertainty around the future of the 26-year-old GM-Toyota joint-venture plant in Fremont, Calif., commonly known by its acronym NUMMI for the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.

The plant, which is represented by the UAW, also makes the Toyota Corolla sedan and the Toyota Tacoma compact pickup truck.

As part of a bankruptcy financed by the Obama administration, GM is dropping the Pontiac brand.

"We have been in discussions with Toyota with regards to potential future products that we could receive from the joint venture," Clarke said. "I'll just be honest with you: so far we have not figured out a product that fits the needs of NUMMI, Toyota nor ourselves."

"We are going to continue the discussions with them and remain open," he said. "Again, they have been great partners to us in the venture and so that dialogue continues."

Toyota said earlier this month that it was open to continuing the joint-venture and to supporting GM if it were asked to do so

Our local Saturn dealer has over 17 Astras on the lot. Considering how few they move/year, that has to be 6months or so of inventory at that dealer.

Probably because no-one wants to buy a Saturn and the Astra has got no advertisement and publicity really.
If GM were to throw as much publicity towards the Astra as they do towards some of their other cars; and sold Astras as Chevys they would be a success
