Default Audi E1: first details revealed

There are lots of talk concerning a new Audi model, the E1, which will be coming with the same platform that the VW up! is currently utilizing. Reports suggest that the car would be position below the Audi A1 and will include several versions. Gasoline and diesel will strengthen the attractive all-electric option.

If Volkswagen will come up with a production plug-in hybrid patterned on the VW space up! blue, an E1 hybrid would really not be something of a surprise. Possible powerplants could include a 600cc two-cylinder turbo and a three-cylinder 1.2 liter unit. The Audi E1 addition, as part of the new small family of cars, will be manufactured at VWs plant in Slovakia.

It will come with a price tag of 13,500 Euros or thereabouts. With fuel economy estimated at 94mpg, the price tag looks good enough. The new 2+1 model is targeted at the Smart electric ForTwo and the Fiat 500 hybrid, but at the same time maintains some luggage space. Together with standard luxury elements, Audi may have an advantage over the competition.

The new model will come with lots of Audis regular looks, together with the mesh grill, alloy wheels and the large badge at the front. Both the front and rear will come equipped with LEDs, and the latest handheld mobile gadget Audi showcased just recently. The device, with touchscreen capability, comes with satellite navigation, MP3 player and phone. It fits into the central console and it substitutes the key, supposedly. The electric will come with Lithium-polymer batteries and could be present if there is a hybrid also. The Audi could hit showrooms by 2011, if it does indeed reach the market.
