Default Help Quick! Painting Tailights Question

I painted my tailights with VHT nightshades, got them to my desired darkness and now I'm adding a couple layers of clear coat. I taped off the clear/white part so only the red part was painted. When I went to clear coat I took off the tape and painted the the clear part with clear coat and it looks terrible. If Im careful and use paint thinner will I be able to take the clear coat off the clear part?

yes or you can sand w/high grit and then wax. use one motion when sanding like pull toward you, then just reapply clear or use regular wax to clear up the high grit scuffs.

GL post pics when you're done!

did you apply the clear to the plastic without sanding it first?

I took the pics on my iPhone so they arent good quality.
After 2 or 3 coats of VHT Nightshades

After a couple more coats. Put it on to see what they look like and not dark enough so I taped them back up and went back to spraying.

After going through a whole can I lost count of how many coats and had to run back to the store to get more VHT Nightshades. At this point I was trying to make it as dark as possible without overdoing it.

Finally I was done spraying them, now it was time to put a couple layers of clear coat .... but I looked at the clock and I was already late for work so I had to throw them on the car and go.
Next day. I said to my friend "Hey, you think if I clear coat the unpainted part on the taillights that it will look fine?" He replies "Yea man it shouldn't be a problem". ... So I put a coat of clear coat on and it looks terrible on the unpainted part, but I figured maybe after a couple more coats it would look better..... But it just got worse. Thank god I only clear coated one of the tailights. So I ran to Sears to get some paint thinner. Let me tell you taking the clear coat off is a PITA! It's still not all off and I was sitting there scrubbing it for an hour or so. But it looks good enough for now. Then I taped off and clear coated both of the tailights. And finally I was done.

IMO it looks amazing, I didn't want to tint the whole thing like everybody else, I want to stand out.

Holy dog doo doo that's dark!!

I hope you enjoy getting rear ended when someone doesn't see your lights. I would have stopped the first time you put them back on the car.

you can actually see through the tint spray really well, we sprayed my friends tails/front blinker covers on his BMW just as dark and it is still very easy to see, even during the day

btw, i like!
