Bonnet Airbag Will Help Save Lives

The airbag system utilizes a U-shaped airbag that runs the length of the windshield. The shape is essential so as not to obscure the driver’s vision. The airbag provides ample coverage for the lower part of the A pillars and also for the windscreen.

The system was developed for Takata-Petri, a Japanese company that specializes in the production of car safety systems. The research team was led by Roger Hardy of Cranfield University. The system was first tested on a Fiat Stilo, and the team believes that the new system could help reduce the occurrence of injuries by 50 percent.

Hardy said that the system really will save lives. He added that getting the system some exposure shouldn’t be too difficult. “It would be relatively simple to bring to the market,” he said.

Like all airbag systems we've seen to date, this will eventually become mandator. Takata will be laughing all the way to the bank as they are leaps and bounds ahead of the competition and have significant patents already in place.

This reminds me of 20's and 30's cars that had everything from primitive airbags to cow catchers adapted for people.
