Default WRC: Solberg gets upgrade for Sardegna

CN: Petter tells Citroen he likes his Xsara but it could be better with parts that are only 3 years old not 4, and oh yeah he's checking out his local Peugeot dealer for 307s.. they cave and give him the 2006 Xsara bits.

Petter Solberg had said, last week, he would not drive his 2005 Citroen Xsara WRC on the next round of the World Rally Championship, the Rally d’Italia Sardegna.

Solberg has been chasing performance upgrades on his 2005-specification car for sometime and the Norwegian says he can’t go into the hot summer rallies with the car in its current state.

“I need some help here,” he said. “Some of the stage times and podiums have been more than I expected with this car, but now I want more. If I can get the 2006 parts for the Xsara, that would really help with the hot rallies.”

“I would get a bigger radiator, intercooler and a bigger air in-take, all of which would help with the cooling and give me more power. I noticed in Portugal, when the engine got to a certain temperature, the power started to drop. I want to fight for the podiums, I want to fight with the Fords and if the car stays as it is, this isn’t possible and I’m not interested in that.”

If he didn’t get the upgrades, the 2003 champion was ready to look at driving a Peugeot. Solberg said he has watched with interest as private teams have developed the Peugeot 307 WRC.

So, Petter finally got his 2006 Xsara from Citroen. That’s quite a big difference from the 05 one, and now he can start to make results for real. He got the car after discussions with Citroen (no, surprise, huh) after threatening them with going to another manufacturer. It will be nice to see what Petter can do when he debuts his “new” Citroen at the upcoming Rally d'Italia Sardegna.

That's great Petter was able to get what he needed to stay competitive in the championship.

However, I always liked the look of the 307 WRC much more than the Citreon Xsara WRC...

It's actually intriguing when you think about the politics of it all - though maybe politics isn't exactly the right word.

Citroen is giving Petter the opportunity to be more competitive - ostensibly "against the Fords" as he suggests in the article - but it can't escape notice that the works Citroen team is up at the pointy end of things beyond those Fords. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but I wonder if Citroen is in any way cognizant (or caring) about people who are tired of seeing Loeb on the top step at every freakin' rally. I wonder if it's possible that Citroen is entertaining the possibility of giving themselves a 1-2-3 podium with Loeb/Sordo/Solberg, or even having Solberg get in between or ahead of the works drivers and stir things up?

I don't mean to be naive enough to think that Citroen really cares much other than that they are winning rallies. It's just interesting to me that they're facilitating a non-works driver, who has been placing 4-5 the past few rallies, to improve his position behind their works team.

And, as said before, I wouldn't mind seeing someone other than Loeb spraying champagne 16 times a year

Petter Solberg and his privateer team will participate in Rally Sardinia, the sixth round of this year's World Rally Championship, with an updated version of his Xsara WRC.

Upgrades have been integrated into the Citroen in order to bring the early 2000's car up to 2006 specifications, making it better fitted for the tough conditions found on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.

"I am very pleased with the cooperation with Citroen, and I think that this upgrade gives us a more competitive car," Solberg said.

"We will do this rally now, and then see how it goes before we decide anything regarding the future," he added.

"This season has been unbelievable, and together with my fantastic team I think we have only seen the start of it!"

Hoping Petter does well.

Is the Xara that much better/consistent or has Petter pulled back down to just 100% on the limit?
