Default Test drove a bunch of cars!

A friend of mine is in the market for a car. He doesn't know much about cars though(he's always been into trucks). So he brought me with him to help out.

First off, I made him test a WRX. The salesmen was as crazy as both of us. He tried to put the car into a 4 wheel drift before he turned it over to us. My friend really liked it though.

Second, he for some reason got the idea that a Mitsubishi Eclipse GT would be a cool car(a friend of his has one). So we stop by Mitsubishi. The salesmen we talked to actually turned him away from the Eclipse because of the lack of headroom(my friends 6'3"). We did test a new Sentra SE-R Spec V while we were at it. Ok car, but like I told him ahead of time, it's FWD. He wasn't to interested.

Third, we decide to stop by the Ford dealership just to beat on a Mustang. He wasn't interested in buying one, we just wanted to test one out. The sales guy kept saying we could open it up if we wanted. So when it was my turn to drive, I flip traction control off and had some fun. Power and acceleration was pretty much what I expected from a V8. When turning back towards the dealership I dropped the clutch a bit and slid the tail across 4 lanes(I've never been much of a muscle car fan, but having the power for this was pretty fun). Hey, the sales guy said we could open it up. As a side note, these guys were sharks over here. Some of the most high pressure salesmen I've ever encountered.

Finally, we stop buy the Mercedes dealer to test out a used E36 M3 they have on the lot. Now my friend could afford this car, but we're both young(20 & 21) so we didn't expect to get the keys very easily. Much to our surprise, all they ask is if we're over 18 before handing over the keys. Even more surprising, they say to be back in 30 minutes, and we head out without a salesmen. Let's just say we tested it to the full extent of it's abilities. That car was so nice. Just the way it felt to drive was what made it such a nice car. The best way to describe it was that it seemed to glide over the road. The quiet interior and smooth suspension made the speed so deceiving. I can see how BMW drivers get stereotyped as ******* drivers. It's just so easy to go fast, and you hardly know it. This car understeered bad though. The 1996+ M3's had wide rear tires and small rear sway bars. It's automatic traction control kept kicking in too. So if he gets an M3, it'll be a 1995 model which was OBD1, no traction control, and had a more neutral handling chassis. The salesmen here were cool, not much pressure to buy right away.

Right now, he's pretty much set on a used M3 or a WRX. He's getting stationed in North Carolina soon, so AWD for the winter isn't an issue.

I tried for TWO frikkin weeks to buy that M3! Grrr....pissed me off so bad, those guys won't deal for anything. They only wanted to give me $11k for my GLX with 26k on it, and they wouldn't budge! Just enough so the banks wouldn't go for it.

I would go for the M3. All wheel drive is not an issue where he's going and if he could afford the M3 he might as well get it. At least he's not getting a product with a glass tranny. Maybe in a year or two subaru will fix this problem but for now if you can get something better go for it.

Yea, I told him about the whole tranny issue with WRX's. He may consider the auto if he goes with the Impreza.

The M3 wasn't that expensive. IIRC it was like 26k, but they offered to bring the price down to about 24 without us even bargaining. I think the clutch is close to going though(not because of us, but when testing, it slipped under a couple of circumstances).

Isn't Subaru having a sale on the WRX? I heard they were going for 24K, no pressure.
