Default Cheap used HPDE / race tires

I was browsing around and found this....

https://www.fossport.com/product_view.aspx?cat=9

I think the Hoosier KONI Challenge Series takeoffs would work well for for track days. Anyone here had experience with used race tires?? If so, how did they work for you?

I bought a set of used R6's from them once. They were in very good condition and had decent grip. Perfect for non-competitive events.

Also try www.turnermotorsports.com for used Koni tires.

I've used them.

I ran the 245/45/17's down in Reno at the SCCA NORPAC Divisional TT Championships.

The 245/45 were too tall for my taste, kind of screwed with the gearing at the tracks we run.

I just got 2 more sets, this time in the 245/40 size.

The tire sizes run much wider than the R6's/A6's. About half inch to an inch per tire.

They are a decent tire, but they are made for 3 hour races so they are a bit harder (slower) than the R6. I don't have any real comparative data between the two, just the old finger nail test. I have been told by a Koni team that they will drop off by a second or two after their about 40 miles. After the drop off they are very consistent for the next 400 miles, until they cord.

I think (if I have my camber issue solved) 2 used sets should last me for the remaining 6 or 7 weekends (1 hour of track time per weekend).

I've got (8) 245/45/17's that I would sell for $300+shipping if anyone wants to try them.

Good deal. I need to find a way to fit 275/40-17's.

Simple, take the car to IAG with the wheels and tires mounted and ask them to make it fit. That's what I did and my 275/35/18 R6's fit perfectly with no rubbing. The fender work is so good you can't tell it's there unless you're looking for it.

Second to check out Phoenix. They have a good stock of take offs.

We got a set of the Koni Challenge Hoosiers for our '04 STi race-car, worked really nice for longer test/practice sessions as far as wear goes. Only thing about the Koni tires is they require a lot of heat to really start working. If its too cool out, they never really get up to optimal temps.

That's an accurate statement. That has been my experience also.

I was behind the wheel in the STi mentioned above. The KC spec tires are a great value. They wear like iron and they are consistent, but you will give up time to those out there on softer compounds. Also on the sizing, they measure 5-10% wider than they are marked. I have a set of 225's that are just a touch narrower than my 245 hankooks. Not to make this a for sale thread, but I would be willing to part with my set of these tires for next to nothing. Every event I run requires DOT tires and these are non-DOT. That is something everyone should know before buying them, check the rules with the group sanctioning the events you plan to run.

You gotta call em. They arn't really in the tire business, they just sell off their extras when they have the chance.
