Default WTB: EJ251(2.5RS engine) - cheap!

Hey, I'm looking for a complete EJ251 - block, heads, intake manifold....for a mock up engine.....

if you have an RS engine you need to get rid of let me know....will take in any condition, but prefer one that isn't in working condition as i dont really want to spend more than a couple hundred....

but yeah, depending on condition, whats left on the engine, etc we can work out a price!...

i have an ej255 shortblock..also a ej251 shortblock too for that matter....

but what i need is an ej251 block with heads, oil pan would be awesome, intake manifold would be awesomest.....

the shape of the ej251 heads is quite a bit different, most wrx up-pipes hit the SOHC heads....basically i want to make a twin scroll header/up-pipe that will work with the SOHC heads (since none of the wrx ones will)....and i'd like to make a intake manifold as well.....accessories like alternator and ps pump would help too...see what i'm saying....so an engine with as much stuff as possible will help

so yeah, and ej25d, ej22, etc, engine wont work....yaarrgg

So you want to use the 255 bottom end - or a 22 bottom end. The up-pipes do not hit the 25d heads - in fact they come from the turbo world and are complete with turbo oil and coolant ports.

So 255 ($$$) or 22 (cheap) bottom and d heads = the robust OEM mix.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1584380

go familiarize yourself with my car....thanks for trying to help but i'm a little bit ahead of where you think im at

i paid 300$ for my first ej255 block...hardly $$$....and yes wrx stuff does not hit the DOHC heads....hence why i said they hit the SOHC heads....again....im not going to be using this engine for anything but mocking up parts for the engine that is already in my car...

also the best route to be going for an RS-T route if you're looking to go cheap is to put sti internals in a 251 block....hydra, gt32 and you're good to go ...you want to stay away from ej22 heads as anything 96(i believe) and newer are almost all single port....the ej251 block is a better option as sti internals go for dirt dirt dirt cheap all day long...while finding internals for cheap for the ej22 is rather difficult (read expensive)

just for ****s and giggles:

which brings me to saying that I picked up my 255 shortblock for very cheap.

using only the block halves (same as sit 257) and I have the crank and rods for sale both forged pieces and they are also the same as the STI pieces as well.

Sorry to hijack Jeff, but Im also offering em to you if you want/need em.

lol no worries for the hijack....i not only accept, but encourage all OT, hijacking and asshattery in all my threads...

aha yeah i have 2 extra cranks and a set of sti rods....and ej255 pistons....and then ej251 and ej255 block halves....im good ....i just need a mockup engine....even if something has some ej251 heads and an intake manifold that would work too....just bolt together the 251 haves and throw the heads on.....i really want to get started on the header and intake manifold

how are the heads less all-round hassle?? that makes no sense.....ej251 heads are perfectly capable.....

and 22 blocks are easier to find? well no **** they've been making em for 20 years.....but 96+ are single port heads....

with either a ej22 or a 251 you're going to need new internals to turbo.....stock wont handle ****....so why not pick up a 2.5 block and get a bit more displacement out of it..

ej251 blocks arent hard to come by at all....call around....if you really want something posting a WTB is usually the least effective way to get it....if you want to talk about hard to get talk about pistons for the ej22.....sti pistons/rods go for 200$ or less all day long on here.....

what are you planning anyway?

i believe andy is talking about using the DOHC heads because you can use stock exhaust and such to clear the heads. an ej22 is cheaper than a 251 no matter how you spin it. i got my entire engine with all accessories and harness for nothing... i had to pull it all myself and scrap the car but that's easy. and it was free...

if you use an n/a ej22 (dual port or single port) block and throw ej25 heads (dohc preferred) on there then you get a low compression ready to turbo engine. And running the DOHC heads you get all the oil lines and exhaust ready to go as it all fits with the DOHC heads.

i know roughly what both of you are planning on doing and while it sounds similar on paper (n/a motor made turbo) you are going about it in completely different ways.

wrx piping works fine with SOHC heads...the problem is when you start using fat up-pipes (like the prosport header/up im using right now)....it fits but it touches the head...not ideal....

and yes you drop some compression....but you still have very weak internals....sure if you're running a little turbo and keeping boost pretty low you'll be fine...but whats the point....take an ej251 (even if you have to pay for it), drop in some sti internals, get some decent EM, a good sized turbo and run away with 300-400 whp no problem....with the stock SOHC heads

and what im planning to do is completely different than what andys wants to do....his is like mine was 2 builds ago.....cheap...

right now i'm leaning towards twinscroll s366/gt4088/etc....on the engine in the car now (PNP 251 heads, cams, ej257 block (stock internals)....18G, hydra, blah blah balh)

theres lots of routes to go.....but i'd argue that the ej22 route isn't really any cheaper/hp...but it also depends on whats in the car to start....90% of people turboing N/A subarus have ej251s in them to start

That's why I said your builds, while on paper the same, are completely different. Your build cost probably 2g's if not more..? Ej22 hybrid cheap cost like 700 if not less.

Completely different builds costing totally different amounts making different power levels.

my first build which was rebuilt ej255, 18G, stock heads, hydra, was ~3400$ after EVERYTHING (hoses, fluids, machine work, etc etc included).....

after that i've sort of lost track of how much i've spent lol.....

but yeah i agree.....different completely.....

if you want to go extra cheap best route is just to turbo the N/A block low boost.....decent power...retarded cheap and reliable if your tune is solid

wooot free bumps....somebody has to have one sitting in their subaru graveyard....or some heads and an IM

I'm not sure this is true.

The way I see it is that messing with cars is pretty entertaining - but it's a TOTAL waste of money - and you're always on the edge of spending way too much only to never be completely satisfied.

I may argue you can build a 300hp EJ22 using 'unwanted' nasty EJ22 block, old D heads, and a slopy VF39 turbo. All OEM. All bolt up. An excerise in cheap-skatery and all part of the challenge. Cheap and dirty - but also likely the best $/hp value around.

It depends on what you like:

1) wrenching on machines in the back yard on a weekend?
2) impressing men or perhaps even the ladies?
3) small unit compensatoin?
4) Ego boost / bragging rights
5) turbo woosh and driving more power than most cars on the road.
6) Pouring hard-earned after-tax dollars down a hole?
7) The biggest and bestest.
8) Near pointles technical challanges.

I'm only interested in 1,8 5 (to a certain extent) and certainly not 6. You, obviously, have different interestes / motivations.

dude.....come on....do you know who you are talking to?? Look at my car....does it look like im trying to impress anyone? I've spent less on my POS RS than 95% of people on here spend.....maybe i've spent more than you.....i know nothing about your car(s) (link me to something).....but i've poured hundreds of hours of my time into my car....i've been to the pits of hell with the ****ing thing....my car is nowhere near the biggest and baddest, nor will it impress anyone....small unit compensation? grow up man....

i have one goal for my car....to make a ****load of power without blowing the bank....i've had the 300hp that your cheap ej22 build could make...and it bores me to tears. Hence I'm going to spend some money to get me to a point where i'm happy (i think 450WHP is a good goal for now)....and when i get there i'm sure that goal will get boring too....and i'll be spending even more money....

I will always drive haggard ass looking subarus (like mine right now) that leak and smoke a bit....and will always try to make the most power for the least amount of money.....you can call that throwing money down a hole....but what the **** is money? you cant take it with you. I dont spend the money i spend on my car (which again is ****ing pennies compared to most people on here) for an ego boost, to impress people(lol my girlfriend hates my car cause it makes her sick) or for any of that other bull**** you assume....i spend it cause i love power....

if you'd actually met me, hung out with the group of guys that are always in my garage tearing something apart, true DIY style, etc you'd realize we're not that different....and you wouldn't have to pull out BS assumptions to try and prove a point....

Therefore you have implied (assumed) that Jeff54 :
-wants to impress people (fail. . it's called franken-prez for a reason)
-small unit comp (fail - - - his hands are fricken huge)
-Ego boost (fail - he doesn't care what anyone thinks )
-hard earned cash down the hole (fail - it's not a hole . . it's a hobby - you go to movies and rent po*no while he buys another block)
-biggest and bestest (well he is pretty big but he's still just a teddy bear - so fail)
-pointless technical challenges (fail as he has rebuilt everything but what . . . the trans so far ? lol )

YOU FAIL !

he he, good times - again, get RR to 'free dyno' your mad skills. More pulls and less unsupported yakatiyak. Is is perhaps possible that you found 300hp boring becasue you never actually made 300 in the first place?

BTW, If I was implying anyting I was implying that Jeff may be more interested in 4,5,6. The list is meant to be a generic car-head list. You know, the ol big engine small pe*#& theory etc.

meh....i wont be going to RR for my "free dyno", I'm not a fan of how that whole thing went down...but I really dont want to open that can again....

and quite frankly i have nothing to prove to anyone....if anyone wants to go for a ride in the car i'll beat the **** out of it for you....but numbers on paper dont really mean anything to me.....i'll drive the **** out of my car till it explodes, then i'll rebuild it, bigger faster stronger yo....its what i love. I learned a while ago that if you start worrying about numbers and times you'll never be happy, but if you put the wrench time in, take the car out at 3am to a windy country road and beat the ever living piss out of it....now thats where you find the joy and satisfaction....

regardless when i get some problems sorted out i'll be heading to a dyno somewhere out of curiosity....i probably wont post the dyno sheet though as it's really not what i'm about....or maybe i will, just to stir some more **** up.....
