Default Moving to Oregon..BYE Cali!!!

So I will be relocating to Eugene Oregon from southern California area. My wife and I are expecting another kid in November and are looking for a change from the fast pace crazy Cali life style. Cost of living and housing seems much more reasonable as well. I have always loved Oregon and its amazing geographical surroundings. I CAN'T wait to get out there! I know there's a SUBIE scene in Oregon.

Anything I should know about the Oregon lifestyle?? Any info..comments will be appreciated. THANKS guys

I moved from southern Cali to washington state last year.Positives the nature is so beautiful. The homes in most areas is cheaper.
Negative is much more than I would have thought.
They only want to pay minimum wage most jobs.
Allot are family owned and they are scumbags love to rip you off.
There is wiggers all over the place.
Im white and the white people are crazy and the ****iest to work for.
I called cali land of fruit and nutes but I met some really crazy people up here.
Most people are such tight asses with money !!!!!
Cali we peee money here you need to give them your soul to part with cash.
Driving were I live its pich black ,deers, elk crossing roads.
Its very hard to see in the rain with on comming traffic especially lifted truck.
The truck drivers are the worst drivers ever in my life I experienced.
Yes life is less rush rush and you dot have to make 150k to be middle class but its hard to make even 50k up here.
It was supposed to be cool weather and was hot this whole summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If my mortgage was not $583.00 and I could afford by house on the cali coast Id go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting..Thanks for your input.
I already have a job..I do MRIs and CT scans so there is plenty of work and money to go around. I hope Oregon is cooler..I don't mind hot weather as long as it has seasons and changes..Cali is summer year round! I HATE THAT!!!
As far as the people in Oregon..when I was there, they seemed very nice. I really hope living there is going to be as AMAZING as I think it is.

If you like good beer and recreational opportunities you will be pleased. I live in Bend and it's a great place to be. I think the people in OR are pretty friendly for the most part (there will always be some crap bags wherever you go) and I talk to a lot of people from all over the country and they tend to feel the same. It's not a coincidence that OR was the #1 state where Americans moved in 2013. It's a blessing and a curse. I haven't spent much time in Eugene but one good thing about it is it's pretty close to the coast, which is a really fun place to visit if you're into that kind of thing. Good luck.

I moved to Portland three years ago from the east coast. I could come up with a pretty lengthy list of things I don't like about Portland but overall I like Oregon. One thing that affects cost of living here is property taxes because we don't have sales taxes but it really depends on where you live and what silly county and city rules govern taxation. Cost of living is lower, and salaries and wages are too but my guess you'll be much better off than in CA. I know I was coming from DC even with a 25% cut in pay.

And if you'll be in western Oregon you'll get three seasons, not four. The rain really does drag on so if you like/need sun, plan a sunny vacation in February. Before I moved here I thought I'd be fine with the rain but 8 months of it gets to be a bit much.

Good luck with your move.

That's one of things that Bend has over the valley. Plenty of sun year round.

THANKS guys for all the responses..once again I really appreciate it!!
Does Eugene get snow at all?? I snowboard so this is a must!! Totally fine if I have to drive a little bit, as long as I can go boarding.
Any ridiculous rules as far as car modifications??? STI has built block with cattles TBE :/
I have had so much dam sunshine from Cali I think I have had my fill for awhile lol
I really am trying to get away from Cali traffic, fast pace, and lack of trees haha
I am praying Oregon will be my saving grace. Rent is so dam cheep out there "ofcoarse me saying that coming from OC so Cal" and houses are beautiful!
My wife and kids should love it!! As soon as I get there I'm getting a German Shepard..this is a must.

You will be a little over an hour to Willamette Pass, which is a smaller ski area. ~ 2.5 hours to Mt. Bachelor and close to 4 hours to Mt. Hood.

You should be fine with your STI. I'm not exactly sure how things are done in Eugene but in Portland they just scan for codes. I can't imagine Eugene would be more strict. Maybe if it's really loud or any other red flags they'll do a visual inspection. The two times I got inspected I just got compliments on the car and questions about brakes, suspension, and wheels. My WRX isn't exactly unmodified.

Indeed. I make so many trips to Bend I might as well move there but good paying jobs are so hard to find.

I've been in WA for 3 years now. I still come across new things or a new way of doing things now and then. People here in WA are relatively nice, I don't get harassed by local police but I will say that I did get a ticket the day after I bought my WRX for doing 7 over the speed limit. The beer is good! Specially the stuff that comes out of Oregon.
It's gonna be wet, you're gonna be cold, and it'll be annoying at first but you'll get used to it. Overall everything is more easy going and you feel less rushed. I love it here.

Every now and then I do miss California mainly because of the family and friends I left behind. The first few years (yes years) are the hardest. My girlfriend and I always had the thoughts of "when we move back" but those thoughts have become less and less.
Every time I visit my hometown I realized how crappy it really was living there BUT I still have an inexplicable pride for La Puente, CA and I don't ever plan to change my 626 phone number.

Eugene had a gnarly ice storm last year, and heavy snow once or twice... This doesn't happen every year. If you like outdoors activities you will be stoked during the summer, and there is a big snowboarding scene for the winter... U of O students drive the population up seasonally, so when school is in session it is more lively around town, especially during duck games... There are quite a few subarus around and some people have organized meets in the past. The oregon country fair is every July, definitely something to check out at least once in your life. Medical MJ is going nuts here, with new dispensaries opening frequently. The food scene leaves something to be desired but only because I was used to having more variety and places don't stay open late here. However if you like Thai food you are stoked. There is a good music scene here, and portland is an hour and a half away for larger shows/nights on the town/city feels. Overall, eugene is a cheap, safe and relatively easy place to live, work and play.

So you were "peeing money" in Cali but couldn't afford to keep living there? Maybe one had something to do with the other? I don't understand how this could be relevant information to someone looking to relocate to the pnw, really sounds like more of a personal problem to me (along with most of your other "negatives" in your list)... Just sayin...

Yes, sorry I dont drink beer but brewery scene is crazy here... In eugene is the whiteaker neighborhood which has quite a few breweries and such, plus a huge whiteaker block party every year which goes NUTS, definitely check it out... Also the eugene celebration, and Saturday market. In the summer there are too many festies to list but rest assured there is a festival for every type of music. I could go on and on, but you get the general idea. Drop a pm if you want more info.

Once you get to Oregon (and are sure you are going to stay) switch your CA plates to OR plates... you will get much less attention from the fuzz.
