Default Paint Chips

My 2002 WRX has 2300 miles, and after washing and waxing today, I noticed some (3-4) small paint chipps - 1 mm to 2 mm in diamater. Is the WRX, or Subaru in general, known for crappy paint? The real question is what have people done to fix the chips. My silver paint should be easy to match? Is this something that I can drive to the local auto shop and pick up some silver touch up paint for, or is the Subaru silver a certin flavor that I have to order a bottle of. Since a very small chip should I get a paint pen? Does anyone recommend some kind of rubbing compound or wax that would help? Should I at least put some sort of sealent on the chip as so it does not spread of begin to rust?

Sorry if I sound anal or like Im frieken out, but this is my first new car, and ****, I have had it for 2300 miles and I am already getting some chips? What the hell is my car going to look like in 5 years; 10 years?

Thanks for any help

peace

yep, subaru paint is known to be pretty soft. however, you will get paint chips regardless of the quality of paint. i drove a 2001 bmw 525i prior to my subaru and it had an excellent paint job, yet it still got paint chips. they're unavoidable, but you can minimize them by either getting a protective cover like the clear stuff from 3m or a bra. you can also change you're driving habits a bit, like drive slower and avoid trucks.

as for the paint match, you can buy cans of touch up paint from your subaru dealer. paints chips arent the easiest things to fix, but heres a site that will tell you how...

how to fix paint chips

hope that helps,

Same problem with mine as well. I used the Langka paint chip system wich is much simpler than the involved process as in the above post.

I am getting the clear bra............a.ka. X-pel protection put on soon..

What I did was install the 3m paint protection kit on it. It works great. I sell the kit and install it to. I noticed that you don't live near us but if you want I can sell you the kit and you can install it. There are 2 different kits for the wrx. One is for the hood, fender and mirror - and the other is for the bumper. They are a little difficult to put but if you are fimilar with putting on decals or window tint you could put this on. Let me know if you are interested and I will get you some prices.

We also carry the head light and fog light protection kits. I have it all installed on my car.

Just wait till something a bit bigger hits ya. The aluminum hood seems to take on little dents easily. First paint that chips easily and then it also dents easily. Gezz. Still love the car and will deal with it... besides most people don't see my front end. Vrooom.

I have a few of those chips as well I will agree that the hood dings to easily. I had a rock kick up on the highway and had no where to go .

I also used the 3M clear sheet (I bought it from www.xpel.com, but others have mentioned other sources too. Strangely enough, I was never able to find these directly in 3M's website). They're well worth the investment. I suggest doing the same for the fogs & headlights too, I just noticed a few days ago that one of the foglight cover has a nick on it, which could've nicked my fogs otherwise.

Here's another thread where I posted pics, if you're curious as to how it looks:
