Looking only at your hands and the steering wheel, you have poor steering technique. At one stage your right hand comes all the way over to about 8 o'clock. Try reaching your leading hand up to about 12 o'clock and pull through. You'll find it much easier and smoother.
I didn't look at your lines but the first big corner was a fair way off. Looked like fun though. Chris. |

was that where you were saying my right hand was at 8? i didnt shift my hand over since right after the hairpin was a immediate right.. but no doubt my steering technique needs major work. |

short sleeves and no gloves?
also you didnt do that well countering the push that you car seemed to be having. Probably caused by going hot into a majority of the corners, and overwinding the steering wheel. When you car starts to be pushy like that break earlier |

They don't require long sleeves or gloves where I go either. I always wear both. One instructor years ago recommended gloves so, you can get out of your burning car and be less likely to get burned hands. After watching a new Z06 catch on fire yesterday, I think that's a good idea.

Speak with a local instructor about it. I call it (and many other instructors call it) Leading Hand Steering but I've heard it called other things. It's a basic of Roadcraft and a foundation of a lot of Racecraft, especially in cars with long ratio racks. Chris. |

it never said in a rule book for my hpde that i had to wear gloves. but i will say thanks for the info on it being there for safety reasons.. I honestly thought the sole reason for gloves was more for feel and grip rather then so that your fingers dont burn up or hot surfaces.. so i didn't want to come off as being pretentious by having gloves. I'll prob pick a pair up. Last edited by STi-MAN; 05-10-2009 at 11:56 PM. |

So what you're saying is that my right hand should have been at the 12 o clock position on the steering wheel? to help pull down for the right? I know there are different schools of thought on steering position.. i read and was taught to keep hands at 3 and 9 as long as possible. similar to this clip but i'll try out your advice. |

There is a lot of different opinions about steering. That's mine. I've read the opposite where it's better to push the wheel than to pull but you have less fine motor control with a push and the push can move your shoulder blade from the seat on the side you need to be bracing with (although this is less of a problem in a car with proper racing seats and a harness). The "push/pull" argument usually comes down to wrist angles when racing but I think the cons of pushing outweigh those of pulling. Hold your hands up in front of you now like your holding a steering wheel (at 3 and 9). Make the turn you made on the left hand hairpin, with your right hand all the way around to 8 o'clock. Look how crossed up you are. Look at your wrist position. Look at your right shoulder all squashed up and see how it pushed your neck and head over. Is that a good position to be steering out of a hairpin into the right hander? Now start again but reach up to 12 o'clock with your left hand and pull through, with your right remaining around 3 o'clock. As you start to take steering off with the left the right reaches up from the parallel, takes the wheel and pulls through for the right hander. The left gies back down to around 9. Your hands had to leave the wheel but the steering would have been easier and more controlled. Obviously you're not going to do that for all corners. The yellow strip on the wheel to identify straight ahead is handy when racing so you don't reach to far when coming back out of a corner. Instructors will often use a bit of electrical tape on a students car to help with steering. I'm not trying to take anything away from that guy in the video. He's obviously a professional. I've never driven that track or even seen it (don't even live in the US) but it just looks different to how I'd approach it. He is also resting a lot at 2 and 10, which is different to me too. Like I said, there is a lot of different opinions about steering. Am I clear as mud? ![]() Chris. |

I was there yesterday also =)
was in the white group with some friends but should of signed up in the blue or purple. =/ too bad i didnt get a timer so i dont know my times. The lines you took for the turn 1&2 (skid pad) was very diffrent then mine. the right hand before the shakane (sp?) started kinda on the inside. Some parts you still had room on the course. Wish i was in your group i was passing everyone in the white group =P |

i was trying out some different lines, this clip happened to be my fastest of the day. if it wasn't for the heat i think i could have ran a 1:28.. since i've run 1:29 both cw and ccw.. but we'll see when the temps start to drop. I tried both going out to the yellow patch before the chicane and cutting early.. i think cutting early might be faster. You should def. get a timer.. its the only way to know if your actually improving. |

It's already been said, but yeah, you need to learn some "shuffle steering" techniques to keep from crossing your hands so much. CPC explains it well. Also, you need to work more on the old "slow in, fast out" theory. Seemed like you were too hot into the tight corners which killed your line and exit speed.

^ yea i'll try out the shuffle technique.
Basically this wasnt the cleanest clip but it was the fastest.. i have no problem going in slow and coming out fast.. but right now im trying to find the maximum corner speeds.. most of the push i think can be dialed out with me coming in a tad bit slower, playing with the shocks and the tire pressures as well. Can you be specific on where else coming in too hot killed exit speeds? i came in too hot the turn before the last turn and the straight away for sure. thanks ![]() reference most cars sti/evo's that run under 1:30 are R comp'ed on this track.. I think the 1st thing I noticed were lack of long sleeves and gloves. But if it's not in the rules, it's optional (albeit recommended).
That looks like a nice course with many possible configurations. |
