Question Possible Project Questions

I am looking to Pick up an Impreza L wagon. I might go with an MY96-97 2.2 But I might end up picking up an earlier model cheap with a 1.8 If I was to do an engine swap and upgrade to a 2.5 or 2.2T would I be able to just get a 2.5 or 2.2 block and then used to 1.8 heads, cams and manifold? If not I would just get a whole 2.5 engine. Which bring my next question. In doing this I would think the best way would be to pick up a TEC II or similar rather than swaping ECUs. Would this be the way to do it? Have the stock 1.8 ECU control AC and such while the programbled does the engine? Which type of ECU would be the best for this project? I am posting this here because my turbo kit will be going onto this car and because this forum is a wealth of info.
Thanks,
Joshua

First of all, under no circumstances should you use the 1.8L heads, unless you have to, for a larger engine. 2.2-T heads are alright, but the 2.5 heads flow the best of them all. Putting 2.5 heads on the 2.2-T would be your best option for the 2.2-T swap. However, the 2.5-Turbo would be the BEST!

As far as the ECU's go, the TEC-II is pricey, but if you have the cash if might be an option. I do know that Imprezinator was running the 2.5 ECU in his RS with a 2.2-T engine.

keep the 2.2 block

then go pick up some used 2.5 heads send them to cobb and be done with it.

Unless you can find an EJ22G motor and just have fun with that.

Brad
doesnt the STI block have a different suffix? is it "k"?

The EJ20-K refers to 1997 (?) and prior models. The EJ20-G is the open deck newer 2.0L motor found in the U.S. WRX and newer Jap WRX's.

I wouldn;t even send the heads to Cobb. the 2.5L heads flow plenty enough air for the 2.2L. if you go any bigger, you will lose the low end where you need it and it will take even longer for the turbo to spool. Stick with the stock 2.5RS heads

Eric

PS: I;m not bagging on Cobb at all
