Default Pre-swap check

I am preping a 70K mile EJ25 for my 01 forester for a swap on a blown motor. Does anyone have any suggestions on things I should do while the motor is out?

I am going to go ahead and replace the timing belt, plugs, wires, and check the valves.

Thanks in advance.

what year and phase is the EJ25? Headgasket would be a great idea, even if it's not a typical problem for that motor. Keep in mind that a bad HG job is worse than disturbing a good but 70K mile HG, so do it right or have a subaru mechanic do it. Oil seals, too. be quite easy and only take a little time to do all the major ones, front/rear main, cams, ???.

2001 Forester, engine is as clean as the day it rolled off the line. Do you still think it is wise to disturb?

i dunno.. that's for you to investigate. I was just making suggestions of things that might be considered. usually a used engine is cleaned and made to look like new when sold unless its a junk yard pull or something like that. Did it come with any documentation or maint. history?

No it is a junk yard pull. I know it wasn't pressure washed due to the dirt under the intake. I went through it last night and everything under the timing belt cover looked new. Still put a belt and water pump on it. Adjusted the valves. They were all real close to being out of spec. Brought them back down close to minimum spec. No strange wear or debri in the cylinder head, oil or oil filter (cut it open). I feel confident that this should be a good engine. I will keep everyone abreast.

EJ-251 is the engine.
